Small description of the match (extra-ordinary incidents etc.): This was the opening match of the Confederations Cup 2013 between the host and the current winner of the Asian Cup. The weather and pitch conditions were good in the Brazilian capital, rain started only in the last minutes. Disappointing was, that the approx. 70,000 seats of the stadium were not completely filled and the atmosphere during the match was rather cool. The match was characterized by three Brazilian goals in the respective third minutes of the first half, the second half, and the injury time. This led to a clear and deserved win over a Japanese team, who showed too much respect and their attacking play was not convincing. For the refereeing team around the world referee 2012 Pedro Proenca, it was an easygoing match, challenging were only single situations.

Referee
Crucial Decisions (refer to penalty kicks, sending-off situations etc.) Minute and Description of the Scene / Assessment of the referees decision Before the 1-0 goal, there was a possible handball by Fred, who played the ball 3 with the border between shoulder and breast; both decisions can be accepted here At the 3-0, Neymars offside position was not active, as he did not obstruct the 48 goalkeepers view. Good teamwork (probably). Neymar fell over a defenders leg in the penalty area, penalty was possible here , but as Neymar could have avoided the contact, not mandatory; immediately 68 afterwards another defender threw himself into a shooting attempt and blocked the ball with his arm. This definitely should have been a free kick near the box, either for handball or dangerous play.

Basic Observations (refer to the general application of the LotG, highlight the referees tactical approach, personality, match control, management of the teams and players, teamwork etc.). Please deploy short but precise and detailed sentences! Positive Points 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Complete control, achieved by 2. and 3. Friendly and relaxed charisma, good communication skills Adequate use of verbal warnings + 1 yellow card in the right situation Some good applications of the advantage rule Different lengths of whistling for different fouls, e.g. a very short whistle for small fouls.

Points for Improvement In a fair match like this, he could be a bit more lenient, too many free kicks given, 1. especially for Brazil On the other hand, he missed some obvious fouls, resp. was too lenient 2. regarding sliding tackles 3. 1.+2. -> more consistency needed 4. Execution of free kicks took too much time, sometimes more than a minute

Assistant Referee 1
Please assess the first assistant referees performance. Minute and Description of the Scene / Assessment of the ARs behaviour 3 49 Onside before the 1-0, quite clear, however important Good, tight onside decision

Assistant Referee 2
Please assess the second assistant referees performance. Minute and Description of the Scene / Assessment of the ARs behaviour No active offside position at the 2-0, good decision, probably together with the 47 referee

Fourth Official
Please assess the fourth officials performance. Minute and Description of the Scene / Assessment of the fourth officials behaviour Brych often walked along the sideline, approx. 20 meters in both halves, following the play. Doing this, he showed much attention to the action on the field, while 1-90 there was no special situation, where it was clearly him to decide. Could be an instruction by either FIFA or the main referee.
