Small description of the match (extra-ordinary incidents etc.):

Matchday 1 of group B in this FIFA Confederations Cup 2013. The match was played between Tahiti (OFC national team champion) and Nigeria (CAF national team champion) in Belo Horizonte (BRA) at Mineiro Stadium. Of course, this was a historic match for Tahiti, the first in a so

important tournament and in a big stadium. They were just happy to be there, meanwhile the Nigerian national team was in a totally different situation. They were going to defect the competition, due to disagreements with the Nigerian Football Federation, but at the end they were convinced to fly to Brazil and play the tournament. About 20,000 people were on the stands, not a big attendance, anyway the match was played in a nice atmosphere. The referee Joel Aguilar from El Salvador had a very easy work. The game was not

challenging and it was always characterized by fairness from the players of both teams.

A dangerous tackle, anyway hitting 14 the ball. Aguilar decides to give a verbal warning. The decision can be shared. No malice by Tahiti player. Nigeria has a big chance to score. Ujah (NGA) is alone in area against the 30 keeper, which is able to make a save, catching the ball. Good evaluation by the referee in a anyway clear situation: no penalty. Omeruo (NGA) is correctly booked for a foul in a mandatory situation near the 41 penalty area.

Basic Observations (refer to the general application of the LotG, highlight the referees tactical approach, personality, match control, management of the teams and players, teamwork etc.). Please deploy short but precise and detailed sentences! Positive Points 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Control of the game, anyway in a very easy match to handle. Communication with players, especially by verbal warnings. The advantage was correctly used in one situation. Excellent cooperation by assistants. Knowledge of the Laws of the Game, YC given in a mandatory situation.

Points for Improvement The first goal of the match, scored by Nigeria, took place after a assist made by Aguilar. He probably was not in the best position, anyway we must underline that 1. it came from a long ball and then a head-butt by Tahiti defender. Sometimes is really difficult to prevent these situations. I cant consider it as a real mistake, nevertheless probably the next time he will try to find a better positioning. In second half, he whistled a phantom foul in favor of Nigeria, too hasty decision. 2. It was the only mistake in foul detection of the whole match. 1 minute of added time was given in first half, and the same happened in second 3. haf. But in the second half there were many substitutions, injuries and other wastings of time, so there isnt consistency in this choice.

Further observations (peculiarities of the referee revealing his character) The referee was able to understand the particularity of the match, and for this reason he decided to avoid a possible YC for Vallar (TAH) when he made a dangerous tackle in the 14 minute of the first half. He preferred to talk giving a verbal warning. We cant anyway point out too much from this match, its even difficult to evaluate the consistency of the referee because at the end there werent suitable situations. In the only one, he correctly gave a YC to Nigeria player (41). Waiting for more challenging matches.

The decision to disallow the goal is correct, the offside is very tight, but the player seems ahead at least by his upper body.
