Crime Prevention and Security Awareness

Extensive studies on criminal acts and their causes reveal that the
perpetrators would look for the right opportunity to strike.
Most crimes are acts born out of opportunity, desire and ability.

Industrial Institution should focus on security awareness and basic crime

preventive measures to reduce the opportunity for crimes to happen.
As Industrial institution have improved the security of their facilities and
migrate to cashless environment, criminal have turned increasingly to
theft /robbery of ATMs or C.I.Ts. ( Easy Targets)
Enormous amounts of cash are robbed in transit as criminals realized that
it is easier to take over one armored truck and a few guards on the road
rather than a whole bank and its staffs or customers.

Preventing a Robbery (Target Hardening)

Layout of premises - Make best use of natural surveillance!

An open, organized environment providing a clear, well lit view from
outside the business premis is a deterrent to armed robbers, who prefer
to operate unobserved.
Avoid any cover for the offender, or an accomplice, such as posters,
curtains and advertising above or below line of sight.
Consider the use of venetian style, or one way glass for observation from
an adjacent office or staff area.
Action should be taken to ensure that potential access points, such as
back doors and windows are secured at all times, when not in use.

Landscaping
If you have landscaping abutting your premises (trees or shrubs) should be
pruned regularly to maintain lines of sight from the street.
Shrubs should be maintained to a maximum height of 1 metre.
These measures will enable staff to observe and monitor any suspicious
activity which may occur inside/outside the premises.

barriers and to ensure that the offender could be seen by your staffs or
security guards.
Lighting - is the cheapest form of security, to ensure brightness through
the area and eliminate dark area that could conceal intruders or criminal
element.
Signage and stickers - Ensure that signs are displayed :> requesting helmets be removed before entering the office,
> Premises under constant video surveillance
> height markers to assist in offender identification (height)
Electronic sensors - can alert staff that customers are entering or leaving
the premises. Even the basic entry alarm sensor can assist staff.

Conclusion
Dont try to be a hero, especially a dead hero.

If the robber demands cash or property, give it up! It's not

worth injury or death.
No one likes to think about becoming a victim of a crime.
However, the time to think about a robbery is before it
happens.
Crimes against business are usually crimes of opportunity. If
you make it easy for someone to target your or your
business for a robbery, chances are someone will.
So don't make it easy. Make it risky and unrewarding.
