EVALUATION
Homework 5%
Some courses will give you homework. The requirement will be posted on the web page vosorin.com. Homework is
expected to be handwritten and provided by next course. 100% of all homework done gives 5% of the final
grade.
Project 20%
Project is expected to be printed and handed 2 days after the final exam
Midterm 30%
Final 45%
HOMEWORK DETAILS
Homework is listed on vosorin.com at the end

WHAT IS RELIABILITY
INDU 691/2 - fall 2016: Application of reliability engineering

RELIABILITY MEANING
12
RELIABILITY : DEFINITION
INDU 691/2 - fall 2016: Application of reliability engineering
13
RELIABILITY DEFINITION
Reliability engineering is an engineering field that deals with the study, evaluation, and
life-cycle management of reliability: the ability of a system or component to perform its
required function under stated conditions for a specified period of time.
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (1990) IEEE Standard Computer Dictionary: A

4 KEY COMPONENTS
Probability
Required function
Stated conditions
Specified period of time
17
PROBABILITY
For example, a timing chain might have a reliability
goal of .9995. This would mean that at least 99.95
percent are functioning at the end of the stated
time.
18
19
PROBABILITY
Reliability is a positive number within 0 to 1 range.
There is not such a thing like RELIABILITY = 0
(mathematically speaking)
20
REQUIRED FUNCTION
This should be defined for every part, subassembly, and
product. The statement of the required function should
explicitly state or imply a failure definition. For example,
a pump's required function might be moving at least 20
gallons per minute. The implied failure definition would be
moving fewer than 20 gallons per minute.
INDU 691/2 - fall 2016: Application of reliability engineering
21
REQUIRED FUNCTION
The definition of the required function defines the
Reliability of a system.
TIP: try to assess the unwanted consequences of a failure
in order to define the desired function

STATED CONDITIONS
These include:
- environmental conditions
- maintenance conditions
- usage conditions
- storage and moving conditions
- possibly others

RELIABILITY - CONSEQUENCES
November 24, 1989 - Three out of six cooling water pumps were switched off for a test. A
fourth pump broke down and control of the reactor was lost; ten fuel elements were damaged
and the reactor was close to melting down. The accident was reportedly attributed to sticky
relay contacts[

In cases where only one landing gear leg fails to extend, the
pilot may choose to retract all the gear and perform a belly
landing because he may believe it to be easier to control the
aircraft during rollout with no gear at all than with one gear
missing.
