 Paula Rego is one of Portugal's most
famous contemporary painters and
printmakers, known for her storybook
imagery.
 Madredeus is a Portuguese band. Their music
combines traditional Portuguese music (many
times erroneously associated with the subgenre
of Fado) with influences of modern folk music.
The lyrics are often melancholic and related to
the sea or travelling or absence, continuing a
tradition of songs that dates back to Medieval
times.
 Marizais one of Portugal's top fado
singers or fadistas, who has helped to
spread the popularity of the music
beyond its birth place in Portugal.
 Amália Rodrigues was born in Lisbon, Portugal July 23rd,
1920 to a poor and numerous family. Since her childhood
she showed a talent for singing although she debuted
formally in 1939 at 19 years old, becoming a great popular
success and she became one of the greatest Portuguese
fado singers.
 Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro was born on February 5,
1985, in Madeira, Portugal. The island of Madeira was also the
place where Cristiano first learned to master his skills as a soccer
player. He was then spotted by former Liverpool manager, Gerard
Houllier at the age of sixteen but Liverpool had no intentions to
sign him at that time because they thought he was too young and
he needed more time to develop his skills. However, in the
summer of 2003, when Sporting played against Manchester
United and defeated them, Cristiano caught the attention of
Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson. He plays now in
Real Madrid.
 José Mário dos Santos Félix Mourinho was born on 26th January
1963. He is a Portuguese football coach and the current coach of
Real Madrid. He has the nickname "The Special One", a self-
proclaimed title which was later taken up by the British media.
Mourinho is widely regarded among experts, players and
coaches, as one of the greatest coaches in football history.
 Eusébio da Silva Ferreira was born 25 January 1942, commonly known simply as
Eusébio, is a retired Mozambican-born Portuguese football forward. He is considered
one of the best footballers of all-time by the IFFHS, experts and fans. He helped the
Portuguese national team reach third place at the 1966 World Cup, being the top
goalscorer of the tournament with nine goals (six of which were scored at Goodison
Park), becoming the first player to receive the honour after it was officially
established, and elected the Bronze Ball player. He won the European Footballer of
the Year award in 1965 and was runner-up in 1962 and 1966. He played for Benfica
for 15 years out of his 22 years as a footballer, thus being manly associated with the
Portuguese club, and is the team's all-time top scorer. There, he won the European
Cup once and managed to help them reach three additional finals. He was the
competition's top scorer on three occasions, in 1965, 1966 and 1968. He also won
the Bota de Prata (First Liga top scorer award) seven times (a national record), in
1964, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1970 and 1973, an unmatched feat. He was the first
ever player to win the European Golden Boot award, in 1968, a feat he later
replicated in 1973.
 Luís Filipe Madeira Caeiro Figo, is a Portuguese former international footballer. He
played as a midfielder for Sporting CP, FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, and
Internazionale, during a career which spanned over a period of 20 years. He retired
from football on 31 May 2009. He won 127 caps for the Portuguese national football
team, a number that makes him the most capped Portuguese player in history.
 Figo was the 2000 European Footballer of the Year, the 2001 FIFA World Player of the
Year, and was named amongst the FIFA 100.
 Egas Moniz was born in Avanca, Portugal, on November 29, 1874.
He received his early education from his uncle, before joining the
Faculty of Medicine at Coimbra University. He received further
education at Bordeaux and Paris and became Professor at
Coimbra in 1902. Moniz entered politics in 1903 and served as a
Deputy in the Portugese Parliament until 1917 when he became
Portuguese Ambassador to Spain. Later in 1917 he was appointed
Minister for Foreign Affairs and he was President of the
Portuguese Delegation at the Paris Peace Conference in 1918. He
won a Nobel Prize for his scientific work.
 He was a Portuguese diplomat. He ignored and defied the orders of his own
government for the safety of war refugees fleeing from invading German military
forces in the early years of World War II. Between June 16 and June 23, 1940, he
frantically issued Portuguese visas free of charge, to over 30,000 refugees seeking
to escape the Nazi terror, 12,000 of whom were Jewish. In fact, he saved more
Jewish people during World War II than Oskar Schindler.
 Carlos Viegas Gago Coutinho, generally known simply as
Gago Coutinho, was a Portuguese aviation pioneer who,
together with Sacadura Cabral, was the first to cross the
South Atlantic Ocean by air, from March to June 1922
(some sources wrongly claim 1919), from Lisbon to Rio de
Janeiro.
 Vasco da Gama, 1st Count of Vidigueira, was a Portuguese explorer, one
of the most successful in the Age of Discovery and the commander of the
first ships to sail directly from Europe to India. For a short time in 1524 he
was the Governor of Portuguese India, under the title of Viceroy.
 Vasco da Gama was born in either 1460 or 1469 in Sines, on the
southwest coast of Portugal, probably in a house near the church of Nossa
Senhora das Salas.
 José de Sousa Saramago, was a Nobel-laureate Portuguese
novelist, poet, playwright and journalist. His works, some of
which can be seen as allegories, commonly present subversive
perspectives on historic events, emphasizing the human factor.
Harold Bloom has described Saramago as "a permanent part of
the Western canon".
 Saramago was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1998.
More than two million copies of his books have been sold inside
of Portugal alone and his work has been translated into 25
languages.
 Luís Vaz de Camões is considered Portugal's and the Portuguese
language's greatest poet. His mastery of verse has been
compared to that of Shakespeare, Vondel, Homer, Virgil and
Dante. He wrote a considerable amount of lyrical poetry and
drama but is best remembered for his epic work Os Lusíadas. His
recollection of poetry The Parnasum of Luís de Camões was lost in
his lifetime.
