BEST BUY!
Pascual Toso 2007 Syrah
90 Pts
$14 Description: Intense red color with highlights of blackberries. Shows an exact point of maturation for the setting in bottle. Spices and red fruit arise in a persistent way. Oak accentuates the rich berry character and coffee.

Coconut and dill aromas rise from the nose, and they are surrounded by berry, cassis and oral scents. The palate is tight, honest and a little hard, with middle-of-the-road berry avors tinged with herbs. Theres size and power to this wine, but also balance. Compared to previous years, its a little less generous but still a good way to go.

A liberally wooded Malbec with convincing boysenberry, clove and mocha aromas. This is more narrow, tannic and tight than Tosos always admirable varietal Malbec (89-point Best Buy in 2007). It isnt 100% plump and easy, but it offers interesting fruit notes and complexity. As a whole, expect tightness along with spice and herb notes. Drink now through 2009.

Outstanding for Argentina. Tosos Perdriel rises above the masses by setting out a spread of minty, coconut aromas followed by intense black raspberry, chocolate, coconut and herb avors. Its pure, loving and generous, with a long, mildly woody nish and lots of mouthfeel and style. Big, modern and very much what high-end Malbec (with 20% Cabernet Sauvignon) is about.

Bargain hunters need not apply, but if youre looking for a pricey but serious Argentine red, the 06 Magdalena Toso is a ne place to begin. At 70% Malbec and 30% Cab, its stout, dark and rich. Aromas of coconut and mint announce new French oak, while the density and purity of the blackberry and plum fruit is commendable. Finishes long and ripe, with spice, prune and leather. Good acidity ensures that it will age well for three to ve years.

When people ask us, Whats your favorite value wine from Argentina, the pet answer is this one, Pascual Toso. A former Best Buy of the year, the 07 keeps the streak of great values alive. Its round, balanced and loaded with holes-free berry and cassis aromas and avors. It is also layered, long and composed.

($100; a 70/30 blend of malbec and cabernet sauvignon) Full, bright ruby. Vinous aromas of dark berries, bitter chocolate, mocha and licorice, along with a strong component of spicy oak. Superripe and sweet, with the intense currant avor carrying a full load of exotic oak. Ripe acidity and serious tannins bring this blend a solid structure, but the wood tannins currently give the nish a slight dry edge.
88 (+?) Pts
($20) Moderately saturated bright ruby. Peppery crushed black cherry accented by violet and spicy oak on the nose. Pliant and sweet, with good density to the rather suave blackberry and spice avors. Fairly tannic but not dry or harsh. Still quite primary, so there's no hurry to drink this.
87 Pts
($20) Red-ruby. Aromas of plum, chocolate mint and pepper. Supple, medium-bodied and oaky, with rather exotic avors of plum, currant and coffee. Finishes with good life and fairly sweet tannins that turned a bit dusty with aeration.
93(+?) Pts
($95; a 90/10 blend of malbec and cabernet sauvignon) Saturated bright ruby. Sexy, superripe aromas of black raspberry, mocha, licorice and nutty oak, lifted by a violet topnote. Sweet and dense but sappy, with superb depth of exotic black raspberry fruit. Wonderfully supple and creamy in the middle, with no edges showing, but also boasts excellent verve. This amboyant and voluptuous wine nishes very long and gripping, with the ripe tannins reaching the front teeth. Paul Hobbs consults for this winery.
90 Pts
($60; a blend of 70% malbec and 30% cabernet sauvignon) Deep, bright ruby. Superripe, almost port-like aromas and avors of black cherry, black walnut, violet and sexy oak. Sweet, dense and ne-grained, with a creamy texture and superb breadth given shape by sound acidity. This huge wine shows a nutty, almost exotic ripeness yet somehow avoids coming off as heavy. Finishes broad and oaky, with sweet tannins and excellent persistence.
89 Pts
($20) Bright ruby. Aromas of blackberry, cassis, spices and pepper. Densely packed and strong in extract, with sweet berry avors and a lightly saline quality. The oak element here is nicely integrated. Not a particularly sweet style, thanks to rm acidity.
88 Pts
($19) Medium ruby-red. Raspberry and currant lifted by owers and herbs on the nose, with complicating notes of pepper and spicy oak. Juicy and ripe, but with brisk acidity giving shape and grip to the dense dark berry avors. Finishes with substantial broad, mouthdusting tannins.
88 Pts
($35) Bright, saturated ruby-red. Blackberry, black raspberry and sexy oak spices on the nose. Primary dark berry and mint avors show enticing sweetness and good stuffing and depth. Finishes with broad, tongue-dusting tannins and a smoky nuance. Not yet complex, but built to evolve in bottle.
