House Republicans Agitating For Immigration Fight

A growing number of House Republicans want to force votes on immigration legislation this summer despite opposition from GOP leaders, including Speaker Paul Ryan and Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy.

At a closed-door meeting on Wednesday, House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., and Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., urged House Republicans to resist the urge to sign on to a discharge petition to force the House to vote on contentious immigration legislation.

"I think it's futile to bring a discharge through which would guarantee nothing goes into law," Ryan told reporters this week, outlining his message to the rank-and-file. "The point I keep making is if we're going to advance immigration legislation, let's advance immigration legislation that could get a presidential signature. Not one
