Deadlines

POETS & WRITERS MAGAZINE ANNOUNCES state, national, and international prizes in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. We list only prizes of $1,000 or more, prizes of less than $1,000 that charge no entry fee, and prestigious nonmonetary awards. Applications and submissions for the following prizes are due shortly. Before submitting a manuscript, first contact the sponsoring organization for complete guidelines. When requesting information by mail, enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE). African Poetry Book Fun

SILLERMAN FIRST BOOK PRIZE

A prize of $1,000 and publication by University of Nebraska Press is given annually for a debut poetry collection by a poet who was born in Africa, is an African national or resident, or whose parents are African. The prize is cosponsored by Prairie Schooner. The African Poetry Book Fund editorial board will judge. Using only the online submission system, submit a manuscript of at least 50 pages by December 1. American Library Association

W. Y. BOYD LITERARY AWARD

A prize of $5,000 is given annually for a novel published in the previous year that is set in a period when the United States was at war. Publishers or authors may submit seven copies of a book published in 2019 by December 1. There is no entry fee. Visit the website for the required entry form and complete guidelines.

Asheville Poetry Review

WILLIAM MATTHEWS POETRY PRIZE

A prize of $1,000 and publication in Asheville Poetry Review is given annually for a single poem. The winner is also invited to read at Malaprop’s Bookstore in Asheville, North Carolina. Ilya Kaminsky will judge. Using only the online submission system, submit up to three poems of any length with a $20 entry fee by January 15, 2020. All entries are considered for publication. Ashland Creek Press

SISKIYOU PRIZE FOR NEW ENVIRONMENTAL LITERATURE

A prize of $1,000 is given for an unpublished or published book of fiction or creative nonfiction that focuses on the environment, animal protection, ecology, or wildlife. The winner also receives a two-week residency at the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology, located on the central Oregon coast. Carol J. Adams will judge. All unpublished entries are considered for publication. Australian Book Review

CALIBRE ESSAY PRIZE

A prize of $5,000 AUD (approximately $3,392) is given annually for an essay. A second-place prize of $2,500 AUD (approximately $1,696) will also be given. The winners will be published in Australian Book Review. Using only the online submission system, submit an essay between 2,000 and 5,000 words with an entry fee of $25 AUD (approximately $17) by January 15, 2020. POETRY AND FICTION PRIZES

Two prizes of $1,000 each and a subscription to Bayou Magazine are given annually for a poem and a short story.
