WHAKATANE’S 50th is probably one of the best hot rodding events I have attended over the past twenty years! What made it so good you may ask, it certainly wasn’t the catering as there was no catered food as such. There were several food trucks and a coffee stall to support which could sell you anything from brekky to dinner.

The answer to why it was a bunch of well-planned things. First off there really is no place better than Squeak’s ‘ponderosa’.It is a perfect setting with no neighbours to annoy, and bands played from late afternoon to nearly 3.00 am (Piston Broke) on a specially built stage not far from the party headquarters.

The run to the pub at the beach was just long enough, the quiz questions brilliant and the new full length new “drag Strip” driveway was a hit. It is not often you witness several gassers, a couple of front-engined dragsters and a nitro car do aggressive runs down your driveway! It is also unusual to have the Maketu Gentleman’s club
