HIGH TIDE

[ North Bondi ]

THE DYNAMIC duo behind Studio Quarters – Theresa Chan and Janice Chenchow – refreshed this North Bondi apartment while embracing its art deco character and beachside location. studioquarters.com.au

To renovate and furnish The front was dark and lacked natural light while the rear living area and courtyard were well lit. Our approach was to embrace the natural qualities of each area. The second challenge was to accommodate the practicalities of a home within a very small footprint. The limitations of the space meant each area had to work efficiently and accommodate multiple functions – the entry joinery housed the laundry, side tables could be used both internally and externally, the bench seat in the kitchen included built-in storage and the dining table does double duty as a workspace. We particularly liked the treatment of the entry way. A typically transitory space was transformed into an area that is not only clever and functional but also visually interesting. By keeping the look and feel of the rear living and courtyard similar, the courtyard appears as an extension of the living area, helping to create a sense of space. Fresh and relaxed, providing an unexpected element of colour without being overwhelming. The dusty green was inspired by the ocean hues. The art was very much driven by the client’s interest in Australian artists George Byrne, Fiona Greenhill, Hannah Nowlan and Caroline Walls. The curved elements found in the joinery and bathroom details drew on the features of the art deco building, in particular the arched window in the kitchen. Yes, very much so. The client particularly appreciated us pushing her boundaries with the application of colour and having her think about things she wouldn’t have normally considered. The resulting space is suited to her lifestyle, allowing flexibility for indoor and outdoor entertaining and a practical home for working and relaxing.
