Rising above a steep incline and earmarked with faux gothic signage, Melbourne’s 1930s heritage-listed Beverley Hills apartments are a sight to behold. With barley sugar-twist columns, bay windows, secluded porticos, decorative motifs and regal outdoor staircases, the twin Hollywood-Spanish mission-style buildings which offered a dose of romantic glamour during the Depression continue to captivate admirers decades later. Despite attempts at obfuscation via cacti, palms and a rare golden chalice vine (Solandra maxima), ‘innocent’ trespassers still are regularly found wandering the vast grounds. Their crime? Guilt by virtue of fascination.
