UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS

of a Federation townhouse in Sydney became a full interior design project for Melissa Koch. Originally we were engaged to assist the couple with finishes and fixtures for a refresh We wanted to achieve a sense of openness in what was previously a sparsely lit townhouse. With the addition of an expansive first-floor master suite, a large, full-height, two-storey window brought natural light into the home. We wanted to retain the character by keeping the original mouldings while incorporating a more contemporary feel. We replaced the old maple wood floors with European oak stained in a dark finish and changed the beige walls for a calming grey that provided a clean palette for the art. It’s tailored with polished clean lines and a calming tonal grey palette. Each room is punctuated by a different ‘hero’ colour to create a sense of adventure. I love all the gorgeous lamps! We were thoughtful about layering the heights of lighting sources, adding new overhead decorative ceiling lights and table lamps. The clients were very organised and had a good idea of the style and direction they wanted their house to take. We started with a colour palette and rugs for each room. Yes! They spend a lot of time relaxing in the now bright lounge room. There have already been numerous dinner parties. However, they spend most time in the new master suite – a haven for relaxation.
