HEART’S CONTENT
in Manly with a simple aesthetic was the task put to designer Alexandra Kidd. We worked with the client on a previous home, however now she is in a new phase, The client had negotiated with the owners corporation to buy an adjoining three-metresquare common space to increase the kitchen, build a study and a bar, but the apartment is still compact. By clever planning and detailing we were able to include a separate dining space with banquette seating and storage. Our client had been using a storage unit and her garage to manage her wardrobe! A redesign of the master bedroom and living space allowed for additional robe space and negated the need for offsite storage. We set out to design a stylish and sophisticated beachside home that had none of the clichéd beach themes (except for one piece of coral!). Everything was to bring quiet joy and a special feeling, from the soft fabric selections to the detailed joinery and the terrace landscaping. We used soft white linen drapes throughout to make the interior feel polished and give a sense of space, and they billow romantically in the sea breeze. Another favourite is the kitchen because it maximises every millimetre. We focused on texture to create warmth and cosiness, such as the Tasmanian hand-turned timber door handles; woven and knotted rugs; and subtle beachside references, such as lining the back of the dining banquette with wallpaper embedded with metal powder which will oxidise in the sea air. The apartment is not just an interior, it is the whole hygge experience.
