VHF PLUS

There were several VHF DXpeditions during the summer, including the K5N effort to activate DL79 and DL89, NM5O’s activation of DL88 and the K6MG multistate 23- and 13-centimeter EME DXpedition. (See last month’s column for details of the K8JH and W7D operations.)

K5N in the Big Bend

This year’s K5N team members were Bill Simpson, N5YA; Kyle DeHaas, KA5D; Ivan DeHaas, KG5UNR; and Marshall Williams, K5QE. Arliss Thompson, W7XU, of Parker, South Dakota, planned to meet the team in Texas and caravan with the group as far as DL89; where he and Giles Simpson, N5YA, would continue on to DL88 to activate the grid as NM5O (the callsign of the Lost Acres Contest Group).

The group hit the road on July 1st but soon had to return home because of a truck problem. Arliss decided to go it alone to DL88 while the K5N team regrouped for vehicle repair. They were back on the road on July 3rd, driving all day and a good part of the 4th before arriving in DL89 at the Big Bend Resort & Adventures RV Park in Study Butte, Texas late in the day. K5N to July 8.
