DX

How many of you get challenged by one of your “local” ham friends about why you only want to work DX … or work any stations, for that matter, without an ensuing chat or discussion? I have for sure.

When I first started my amateur radio addiction, I found myself thrown into the Novice Roundup as my very first experience of getting on the air. My first “radio experience” was using an old Philco HiFi all-in-one console that was in my brother’s bedroom. It was relegated to his bedroom when the TV in it died. Bear in mind, it was one of those black-and-white round picture tubes, probably only a 10- or 12-inch screen. But the AM-FM radio and the record player worked fine. It even had a 45-RPM record player attached to it. When my brother went to college, I took over that bedroom and acquired that old console. I was probably around 10-11 years old at the time. My mission was to somehow get that darned TV to work. I found that the audio worked OK, but the picture was intermittent, mostly not working at all. Now, I was absolutely NOT a technician.
