LETITIA FLY

START-UP COSTS: ‘It’s hard to make money immediately,’ says Letitia Fly. ‘About R120 000 covered our costs for the first six months: the sewing machines, material, setting up the brand, the logo, the website, the photo shoots and salaries. After that the business sustained itself.’

TURNOVER: ‘The business has grown from three to eight employees. It’s doubled over the past five years. We make between R30 000 and R80 000 a month, sometimes more.’

Letitia Fly established the Stonecamp leather bag label five years ago while she was on maternity leave with her first son.

‘I was struggling to find a nice, functional leather handbag that didn’t cost the earth,’ she says.
