How did you get into hiking? My parents were avid hikers. Before the age of 10 I’d already done the Harkerville Trail, the Otter Trail, the Groot Winterhoek Trail (twice), plus lots of other day trails. I also had plenty of experience camping in the wilderness.
And you’re still a fan? Absolutely! When hiking, you experience a sense of peace that only comes from spending time in the wilderness, and the deep satisfaction of using your body as a vehicle to transport you to some of the most magical places in the world.
I believe hiking is one of the most accessible activities that any person with the right mindset can enjoy. Every hiking trail has its own appeal and challenges. As with most things, it’s what you make of it. It’s up to you who you choose to hike with, and how much time you devote to small pleasures like looking at flowers, stargazing and swimming.
There’s one that I will never forget: summiting Galdhøpiggen (2 469 m), Norway’s highest peak, in 2014. I’d never hiked in snow before and it was an incredibly difficult
