Audio and model railways: the inside track

I read Jim Lesurf’s Opinion piece in the June issue with a smile. I have been a reader of Hi-Fi News since the early 1960s and from the late 1940s (with a few gaps) also a model railway enthusiast. Much to my surprise, I found on my shelf just the LP that Jim referred to in his column: EMI’s Stereophonic Demonstration Test Record. It has on it the recording of an express train going from left to right followed by a goods train going the opposite way.

Also on the shelf was an Argo disc of Trains In The Night, recorded at Princes Risborough station on the old Great Western railway. By odd coincidence (or perhaps my reason for buying it), that was the first commuter station I travelled from. Both records sound terrific
