The smell of smoke and the haze that filled the Australian sky in January was not from the fireworks set off to welcome the new year.
They were from the catastrophic bush-fires that burned across the country even before 2019 became 2020, resulting in a number of human lives lost, millions of animals burnt or euthanased, homes razed to the ground and families displaced.
