‘Me time’ called, but so did an adventure, of sorts. I decided to combine the two and, because I’d be alone, glamping at AfriCamps at Stanford Hills seemed a wise option. An easy drive from Cape Town along the scenic route through Rooi Els, Betty’s Bay and Kleinmond led to a short gravel road off the R43 – and my destination. On Stanford Hills Estate, a boutique wine and protea farm, my luxury tent had an open-plan living area with fully equipped kitchen, two bedrooms with queen-size, extra-length beds, and a single bunk. From the deck overlooking a dam and the Stanford Valley, I could see hikers along the distant trails, and children with fishing rods making their way to the water’s edge. I chose a horse-riding adventure offered on site and, because it was a few years since I’d ridden, I happily agreed to the recommended, reliable steed that treated me very gently.
