Behind the headlines

I was a full 20 minutes late for my first day at Shooting Gazette in July 2006. Things had started so well. It was a picturesque 50-minute and near three-mile walk from my flat in Easton on the Hill, across the border into Lincolnshire then down into Stamford. I was keen to make a good impression.

Back then, the magazine was based at Rock House, an imposing Georgian building whichwas so eager to start the day’s work even earlier than its new staff writer – fresh from journalism school - had planned to.
