Questions of value
What is the value of wildlife ranching? To consider this question requires that we think about the meaning of the word ‘value’. The Oxford English Dictionary defines value as “the regard that something is held to deserve; the importance, worth or usefulness of something”.
For some people, value can be thought of in a material or monetary sense; for others, it may be thought of more broadly, in social, cultural or moral terms. Those who value wildlife do not necessarily value wildlife ranching. To reflect on the diverse values of wildlife and wildlife ranching exposes the roots of many contemporary social conflicts and policy concerns relating to the wildlife ranching industry.
