FIFE FLYER

Chris is the owner of the firewood and forestry services company ‘Logs in Fife’. He was brought up in the county, and the family has been involved with forestry and timber services for many years.

“It all started with Mr John Birrell of Sinclairtown near Kirkcaldy, who came from my mother’s side of the family,” he explained. “He worked all over Scotland living in mobile caravans and using a combination of Clydesdale horses and pole carts. Forestry wood was in great demand, especially around the time of the Second World War.”

In 1958, the business moved to Tannerhall farm near Milnathort, where the family built a sawmill. The mill sold timber to the local mining and farming communities, until the early 1990s.

“We continued to use horses, right up until the 1990s,” Chris recalls. “By this stage the company had also diversified into road haulage. These were difficult times as local businesses were affected by the closure of the Fife coalfields. Coal
