SONY WF-1000XM3

The predecessors of these new Sony WF-1000XM3 true wireless in-ear ‘phones (the WF-1000Xs, which were launched back in 2016) became famous because they were so much better than the-then ‘flavour of the month’ Apple AirPods. This time around, Sony has added so many features and performance improvements that I can confidently predict that this new model will be a game-changer, affecting not only Apple, but all the other manufacturers with products in the wireless in-ear market category.

And yes, in case you were wondering, Sony does seems to have ‘skipped’ a generation with its model numbering system, because there was no WF-1000XM2: we’ve gone straight from the WF-X1000 to the WF-1000XM3.

THE EQUIPMENT

You can see a tiny strand of DNA from the original WF-1000Xs in these new WF-1000XM3s (the WF stands for ‘Wireless Freedom’, just in case you didn’t know) but to all intents and purposes, the WF-1000XM3 is a brand new design.

Available colours are black and ‘champagne’ silver—a deliberate move by Sony to bring the finishes in line with those offered for its WH-1000XM3 circumaural noise-cancelling headphones (of which I own a pair, about which more later)… but I
