Until the early 1970s, mixing was a very hands-on, manual process. The final mix was typically played back from the multi-track tape machine, through the mixer and outboard effects and recorded onto a separate stereo tape machine to create a master. The mix engineer would ‘ride’ the faders, adjusting levels in real time.
