As long as I can remember, I’ve mindlessly picked at my nails. But one day I stopped. And by the afternoon on this particular day, I remember saying to a friend, “I will never pick my nails again.” And I didn’t. I still don’t.
Studies show that habits, like nail-picking, are deeply ingrained in our psyche, or subconscious, whichever word you wish to use for actions we undertake without awareness, like reaching for a light switch in the dark - the light is on and we can’t recall the motion of our hand reaching to turn it on.
