PETER BONETTI

(1941-2020)

It is unfortunate that Peter Bonetti will be remembered above all for the costly and decisive errors which he made when playing for England in Mexico in the 1970 World Cup.

What has largely been overlooked is that he was in an anything but happy and settled state, aware not long before he went on to play in place of Gordon Banks that his marriage was very much under threat. This had produced three daughters and a son, but was by then in a state of disintegration.
