Although, for years, I advocated the use of various forms of pits right out in the open fields where pigeon are feeding, or can be brought in by decoys, I have only once seen one dug or used, except those I have sunk for myself.
I have, at times, dug very shallow-lying pits, as you might on the sand of the shore, and I have dug deluxe models with a seat hacked out and a roomy spot for the dog. It is surprising, if you are dug-in along a line of flight, or near enough to one, or to an actual feeding ground, to be able to decoy the pigeon, what clear, ‘clean’ shooting you can often enjoy as birds fly across within range.
