To the Tentatively Hopeful, Most human societies have fostered a discrepancy between what is generally accepted as the official story and what is widely known and experienced by the society’s actual members. In the United States our discourse is organized in the shadow of what is officially (versus what is actually) experienced, and it is predominantly White institutions that monitor and regulate the discrepancy between the two. In this country nothing is widely recognized or officially accepted unless a critical mass of White-identified people has decided to deem it so.
