New boilers for Tornado and the P2 taking shape at DB Meiningen

THE A1 Steam Locomotive Trust, builder and operator of 101mph Peppercorn Pacific No. 60163 Tornado and which is constructing Britain’s most powerful steam locomotive in new Gresley P2 2-8-2 No. 2007 Prince of Wales, has announced that significant progress has been made on its two new boilers.

In June 2019, the trust placed a £1 million order with Dampflokwerk Meiningen, a workshop of Deutsche Bahn, for two new Diagram 118 boilers,. As previously reported, the order will enable the trust to rotate the three identical boilers over its two locomotives, with two operational boilers and one ‘spare’ undergoing overhaul at any one time. DB Meiningen delivered original boiler in July 2006.
