Shimano EP8: more power, range and customisation.
Shimano released their second generation eMTB unit in early September, building on the platform of their STEPS system. Shimano STEPS found popularity as it was less bulky and lighter than the commonly used Bosch Gen3 system, while also using a traditional chain ring size, allowing for eMTB geometry that more closely resembled that of a regular, or analogue, bike. Bulkier eMTB motors made very long chain stays necessary, and while slightly longer rear centres do facilitate stability, the STEPS motor allowed a return to better geometry that suited how mountain bikers wanted to ride the highly capable eMTBs that were being launched. Still, many eMTB fans were awaiting an update from Shimano.
The new EP8 system now offers 85Nm of torque, a 300g weight saving over STEPS, way more customisation options via the e-Tube app, shorter crank options, lower drag, less noise and better heat management. And best of all - it fits the same bolt pattern as STEPS E7000 and E8000. So yes, upgrading the motor in your eMTB is now something you can do. Does that mean mountain biking has made a step towards motorsport? Maybe.
