Torsion bar relief

Q Following a near clutch failure on my 1958 XK 150 DHC, I removed the engine and gearbox for clutch replacement and a light overhaul. As is inevitable in these circumstances, the ‘while I’m at it’ thinking kicked in. I have had a set of Superflex polyurethane wishbone bushes on the shelf for a while, so as the car is obviously out of commission for a while, I decided to change them.

In order to release the torsion bar tension, I placed a floor jack under the lower wishbone to take the load. I now realise I have stumbled on a problem because the jack simply raises the car and has minimal effect on the
