Plain but sensual

There is not enough of Pride and Prejudice, and it’s well out of copyright, so on we go with sequels, parodies, mash-ups and alternative versions. Sometimes all that’s required is the addition of zombies or dragons. More often, another character is plucked from the cast list and given a turn.

(Janice Hadlow, 2020) takes up the story of with none of its politics or sizzle. (Julia Barrett, 2012) follows the courtships of Georgiana Darcy. Just as (Alice Randall, 2001) subverted with a black point of view, Jo Baker’s (2013) reframed Austen’s novel from a below-stairs perspective.
