Windsor Castle — the historic heart of the British monarchy — was a fitting backdrop for Prince Philip’s final send-off

It was the place where he and the young Princess Elizabeth fell in love and the home where the Duke of Edinburgh and the Queen spent their final year together.

So as the Queen and royal family gathered to mourn Prince Philip last week, Windsor Castle – the historic heart of the British monarchy – was a very fitting backdrop for his final send-off.

The Duke, who died peacefully at the castle on 9 April aged 99, lay at rest for a week in the Private Chapel he helped to design following the fire of 1992. And, ahead of his funeral on Saturday 17 April, the Queen – who turns 95 this week – is believed to have said a private goodbye to
