About this audiobook

Raistlin Majere has become a Black Robe wizard and travels to Neraka, the lord city of the Dark Queen, ostensibly to work for her, though in reality he means to further his own quest for power. But Takhisis finds out that the dragon orb has entered her city and sends her draconians to find and destroy the wizard who has it in his possession. Before her agents can strike, though, Raistlin finds out that Takhisis means to take control of all wizardly magic. She has ordered Kitiara to set a trap for the Gods of Magic on the Night of the Eye, when all the high-ranking wizards will be in Neraka to celebrate.

As the forces of light, with help from the good dragons, are turning the tide of battle, Raistlin is forced to flee, for his foes are closing in on him. As the Dragon Highlords vie for the Crown of Power in the Temple of the Dark Queen, Raistlin Majere wages his own desperate battle against Takhisis in the dungeons below and meets again the brother he betrayed. The fate of the world hangs in the balance.

Returning to the classic characters we can read about the whereabouts and deeds of Raistlin after he left his companions at the Blood Sea. Simply a must for the fans!

Raistlin returns in volume 3 of the latest Chronicles trilogy from Dragonlance stalwarts Weis & Hickman. Long-time readers may skim past familiar passages of world backstory (yet another, somewhat perfunctory, recounting of Lord Soth's biography?) while new readers may be a bit lost. Yet the plot of this book is twisty as the soul of its protagonist, and it offers a compelling portrayal of one of the series' most intriguing characters during one of the most mysterious periods in his life.Perhaps a bit more introspection would have served to get further into Raistlin's "head" -- his trademark sarcasm seems entirely limited to his dialogue -- and some scenes feel a bit rushed. The dramatic first encounter between Raistlin and the commander of the Dragonarmies, Ariakas, is given a rather cursory summary (what a wasted opportunity!). The writing tightens in the last third of the book, when the plot begins to come together and we get to see Raistlin doing what he does best -- scheming against the gods in the service of his magic.Three stars for a compelling, twisty plot and interesting magic, plus half a star granted out of fondness for the protagonist.

The Chronicles stories are cleverly woven between existing tales to present further adventures for a few of fantasy fiction's best loved characters. Raistlin Majere, a fan favourite, gets another shot, having already had a trilogy documenting his history. This time it's straight in to the action as Raistlin attempts to create his own path of mastery against a tapestry of betrayal and revenge. Set amidst a gallery of rogues and evil-worshippers there is little opportunity for the authors to offer balance with the story and although there are factions vying for power, the novel is shrouded in dark intentions. Subsequently the pace never really escalates to the previous heights since there is little emotional engagement, remaining flat and at times the godly intervention seems rather cumbersome. Fans will lap it up since Raistlin has all the limelight and there is some impressive writing at the end to ensure the continuity with previous novels remains intact.

So what can I really say about this book. This is not great literature, but I don't expect that from the Dragonlance books. I do expect a fun read and I sort of got that with this book. These Lost Chronicles novels take us to places and events that were glossed over in the main Chronicles series so we get to see some of favorite characters from the past. This novel focuses on one of my favorites in Raistlin. However, I'm not sure this really worked. I knew how it all worked out in the end being familiar with the main story line and I have to admit, the path to get from beginning to that ending just wasn't all that intriguing and I probably could have lived my life happy having never read it. But, with that in mind, I read this novel and it was an easy quick read that doesn't take much effort, so if you enjoy the Dragonlance world, then I'm sure you'll enjoy this.
