Descrição

George, aka "Suds," has just entered third grade, and he's heard the rhyme about "first grade babies/second grade cats/third grade angels/fourth grade rats," but what does this mean for his school year? It means that his teacher, Mrs. Simms, will hold a competition every month to see which student deserves to be awarded "the halo" - which student is best-behaved, kindest to others, and, in short, perfect. Suds is determined to be the first to earn the halo, but he's finding the challenge of always being good to be more stressful than he had anticipated. Does he have to be good even outside of school? (Does he have to be nice to his annoying little sister?) And if Mrs. Simms doesn't actually see him doing a good deed, does it even count?

A warm, funny return to elementary school from master storyteller Spinelli.

An excellent read-a-aloud beginning the school year and periodically throughout the semester. Are there any "Third Grade Angels"? I liked the book; good deeds get good rewards without asking or trying to be seen.

PSC Review: Spinelli’s prequel to Fourth Grade Rats is well told by Suds, in first person. He’s now a third grade angel and his teacher hands out halos to deserving students. Suds, who wants to earn the first halo of the year, works hard looking for ways for his teacher to recognize his good deeds. When a classmate who really doesn’t want the first halo wins the first halo Suds is stunned. This would be a good read-a-loud at the beginning of the year because Spinelli works in some interesting concepts like goal-oriented kindness or guilt by association. I listened to the audio book and enjoyed not only the story but the interview with Jerry Spinelli at the end.

A prequel to Fourth Grade Rats, this short funny chapter book will delight. Spinelli uses a short verse “First grade babies, second grade cats. third grade angels, fourth grade rats” to describe how children should act in early elementary school. As is Fourth Grade Rats, the fun ensues as Suds tried to fit the image of the poem. There is a nice lesson at the end but it’s not too obtrusive. What’s an angel? Do you have to be good all the time? Several fourth grade teachers use Fourth Grade Rats for a beginning of the year novel study. Perhaps pairing the two books would be an interesting character study. Neither book is longer than 150 pages long so this should be an easy two week read. Hopefully, Second Grade Cats is coming soon. This review is based on an advanced readers’ copy from BEA 2012
