That's what it's like for Luce to be apart from her fallen angel boyfriend, Daniel. It took them an eternity to find one another, but now he has told her he must go away. Just long enough to hunt down the Outcasts-immortals who want to kill Luce. Daniel hides Luce at Shoreline, a school on the rocky California coast with unusually gifted students: Nephilim, the offspring of fallen angels and humans.

At Shoreline, Luce learns what the Shadows are, and how she can use them as windows to her previous lives. Yet the more Luce learns, the more she suspects that Daniel hasn't told her everything. He's hiding something-something dangerous. What if Daniel's version of the past isn't actually true? What if Luce is really meant to be with someone else?

Angels. Demons. Half Angels. Luce's young life is a horrific journey that she just can't seem to get away from no matter how hard she tries. We all like to have some alone time to clear our heads and gather our senses. When will Luce be able to get off her crazy train?

The premise: ganked from BN.com: Hell on earth. That’s what it’s like for Luce to be apart from her fallen angel boyfriend, Daniel.
It took them an eternity to find one another, but now he has told her he must go away. Just long enough to hunt down the Outcasts—immortals who want to kill Luce. Daniel hides Luce at Shoreline, a school on the rocky California coast with unusually gifted students: Nephilim, the offspring of fallen angels and humans. At Shoreline, Luce learns what the Shadows are, and how she can use them as windows to her previous lives. Yet the more Luce learns, the more she suspects that Daniel hasn’t told her everything. He’s hiding something—something dangerous.
What if Daniel’s version of the past isn’t actually true? What if Luce is really meant to be with someone else?My RatingFine a Cheaper Copy: I actually liked this book a lot better than the first, but fans of the Cam/Daniel/Luce love triangle are going to be disappointed, because not only does Cam have a diminished role in the book, but he no longer appears to be part of the triangle. There's a new player in town for that role. That said, Luce isn't stupid-in-love with Daniel any more either. She's asking questions about him, her differing pasts with him, and she's starting to wonder about the inherent selfishness of him always coming into her life when he knows it'll kill her and ruin the family she's part of at the time. Me, I applaud this, but I'm an adult reader who's getting a wee bit tired of the paranormal romance formula as it's applied to YA. Luce isn't just following her heart. I think she knows she's supposed to be with Daniel, but she's got very good reasons to question why this must be so, and me, I'm not so in love with the idea of them as a couple that this breaks my heart. That said, don't approach this book looking for any answers in the mythology. Lauren Kate gives us none. What we get instead are more clues and some interesting developments to the world-building and quite the cliffhanger ending. We meet some interesting new characters, have fun with some old characters, and learn a tantalizing bit more about the war that's coming and what Luce's role in it is. I was quite happy with this submission, as it didn't make me stop and ask the same kinds of questions as the debut did, and it seems to be catering to my "I'm tired of paranormal YA romance" tastes of late, though I suspect when it's all said and done, Luce and Daniel will be a couple. I'd like to be wrong. But I'm happy to keep reading, as this is fun fluff, but not worth the full hardcover price. However, if you liked the first book and can get this book on sale? Go for it! Just bear in mind my earlier warning about the love triangle. :)Review style: This book is both very similar and quite different from Lauren Kate's debut of Fallen. I want to talk about those differences that a lot of reviewers seem to hate and explain why those differences work so well for me. So yes, expect spoilers. I really did enjoy this sequel. Although I was expecting more "action". I was surprised that the only thing the Luce had learned in this book was how to manipulate the "shadows" so that she can see and enter the past and present.

In the first book, Daniel, is a sweetheart. That whole tormented love guy. But in this book, because if Luce dies she will not reincarnate again, he's overbearing and strict. He commands her to not leave the "safe" school grounds of Shoreline (school name). Meanwhile Daniel is working with Cam killing the outcasts (angels who fell and are neither with heaven or hell) and people from the group that Miss Sophia (from first book) was with.

    -~spoiler~-
So in the end Luce travels into a random shadow with no knowledge of where she will be put out at. Because she thinks that Miles (who she develops a crush on at the school, him a nephilim) as he shift to project an image of her and was shot with a starshot. Starshots can only kill angels. And here is my other confusion with that. She stands in front of Daniel and tells an outcast that you can't kill me with a starshot, and Daniel laughs, but in a pained way.. or w/e the way it was written. But with a couple of hints throughout, it gives you the impression that she too is an angel, just doesn't know and no one will tell her.

Part of their beginning story that she has learned is that Daniel fell for her, but I'd have to reread, to find the exact paragraph or phrasing but it seems like, she was also an angel and not a human that he fell for. That they were both angels and fell for eachother. But since no one has told Luce anything for the entire book, and she had only learned a few facts on her own, she travels in the shadow.

So really in this book, you don't really learn much new. There's a truce so heaven and hell can work together, but also that Luce is the key for people to gain entrance back into heaven. The is also talk of the end of days. and that there will be a pivotal moment when everyone must choose sides. Luce believes that depending on what side Daniel chooses will define the winner. But I don't think that's the case. During one of Luce and Daniel's fights, she says to him to pick a side, and it should be easy if it was her she would pick the side of good. But Daniel isn't looking at her just looking away from he and he repeats her, that she would pick the side of good. And I think that makes it seem like a couple of situations, that one, one of them was previously on the side of evil. and two, that maybe if he picks the side of good that means he will have to leave Luce. That's what it seemed to me atleast. But then again. That's how I took it. And the way said scene plays out, there are many things that you could infer.

So again, Daniel has this unending love for Luce, and he will do anything for her. But it also seems that maybe she doesn't feel exactly the same for him. She begins to have a crush and even kisses Miles. And Miles seems to know more about the strain on Luce and Daniel's relationship too. Both him and Shelby keep telling Luce that he's been lying to her. Granted they are both Nephilim kids and not full angels who know all the history. But they know that Daniel is lying to Luce and treating her like she is a child who can't handle the knowledge of everything that is going on. All the other angels won't tell her either and they all know also. In the end I think that whatever side Luce picks will make the difference. Daniel was one of the highest ranked heaven angels who fell for Luce. But her two teachers Frankie (female angel) and Steven (male demon) are from both sides and love each other, and ones for heaven and ones for hell. But Frankie says to Luce how they love each other, but when the war comes she must kill Steven because of the side he is on.

So... gotta wait another year. *sad face*

This book was just ok. I probably wouldn't even be considering reading the next book if the cliffhanger at the end wasn't so interesting and one of our patrons hadn't told me multiple times how much she likes this series. I'll give it one more book....

I guess it's just too sappy for my tastes and the romance doesn't seem believable.

In this second book in the Fallen series, Luce is now in California hiding at a new school that is a vast improvement over the last. Daniel shows up now and then, mostly to fight with Luce who is more interested in Miles, one of the new students.I have so many questions. If Luce and Daniel are a romance for the ages, why is she even looking at Miles? If the Announcers/Shadows are Luce's memories, why is she seeing what's happening to people after she's died in their lives? Why can't the Outcast tell Dawn from Luce if they know by their souls? This story felt like a placeholder, something to make the series longer. Not that much really happens, and Luce doesn't learn any more about her past lives that would help her. Certainly, Daniel isn't helping her advance though I guess that's one of the secret rules of their romance.Since I got all the books in the bundle, I'll keep plowing on, hoping it gets better, but I'm not seeing why this series is rated so well (at least so far).

This book was better than the first one. It had more action, more information, new people. Basically more everything. Only negative thing in this book was that it had less Daniel. All though that was necessary for things to happen like they did. It wad also easier to get to know Luce better and this book was more about Luce than anything else. Can't wait to read the next instalment in the series.

What's with this trend of there being two guys fighting over the girl? Seriously- Twilight, Iron Fey, Fallen- a girl doesn't need to have two guys fighting over her- it just leaves one of them miserable (although it is fun to have teams- admittedly, for someone like me who can't align with a sports team, that's nice). Luce's waffling really annoyed me- I wanted her to stop flailing around and get some direction. At least they'll probably finally explain things to Callie.

Ah, another instalment in another series that reads very much like the current formula - girl goes to new school, girl sees boy, boy appears to dislike girl immensely, girl likes boy, turns out boy LOVES girl but is avoiding her for "her own good". Okay, so that's essentially the plot of book one, "Fallen" (with creepy school and fallen angels, too). Book two catches up when girl and boy are finally together and girl hasn't spontaneously burst into flames or dropped dead from the contact. but alas, girl cannot be with boy, because something dangerous is afoot. Insert 200 or so pages of girl angsting over boy-she-hardly-knows-but-believes-is-her-one-true-love because of something he said about her past lives etc. Enter, perfectly nice, normal boy with feelings for girl. Insert confusion. Add in a few angels, drop hints about some great angel/demon war brewing when the truce is broken and end with a cliffhanger. And you're done. Another cliched, generic paranormal romance aimed at teenage girls.

To be fair, Luce does display a certain element of character development in this book, and although she mopes over Daniel for 90% of it (the other 10% being angry at his manipulative, controlling ways), she does think for herself. But... I don't get it - why not just stick with Miles, tell Daniel to go shove it and get on with her life, forgetting about this angel/demon war. Doesn't seem to be much difference between angels and demons anyway.

And... remember how Shelby hated Luce at first? And how it was revealed that she had a crush on Daniel? Wouldn't it have been FAR more fascinating if Daniel had turned out to be the Angel that fathered her and then left? I mean, seriously, that would add some really interesting elements and is completely possible, because Daniel is eternal; so why wimp out and not even make him have a passing interest in her?

Will I read the next one? Maybe...

    AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love how in this book we found out more about Luce's past lives and we begin to piece together her importance in the lives of the fallen angels and we meet the nephilim and the introduction of another guy after Luce's heart is really good ... because it puts competition against Daniel ...

I love the Thanksgiving scene ... where all of her friends from all parts of her life start appearing everywhere i was cracking up during that part!!

this book answers many questions asked in the first book, but also opens up some questions of its own
like ... Should she and daniel really be together?
Should she keep putting herself in the constant danger that she is in whenever she is with daniel?

and these questions are ggod ... because the story wouldn't go anywhere if Luce wasnt a headstrong personality and just some silly little girl who does exactly what her 'boyfriend' tells her too!!!

I enjoyed this one a little less than the first one, it was similar except she knew some of what was going on; didn't stop her from making stupid decisions though. Either way, the ending more than made up for that and I'm looking forward to starting Passion on my way home from work.

This book sadly was a DNF for me. I read the last one and had a 'so, so' response...this one just made me want to throw it. I just couldn't get into it...it felt like the same clouded in mystery feeling as the last book...also I think Luce is getting whinier...and I didn't like that. As always the covers are gorgeous...I wish I could have liked it more!

I enjoyed this book more than I did the first one in the Fallen series. I read through this book a lot quicker than I thought I would and will be giving my usual 2 pros & 2 cons for a review.Pro #1: Compared to the first book, I really liked how Luce seems to be coming into her own about who she is. Instead of being this helpless, needy girl that just can't seem to put one foot in front of the other without Daniel, she takes it upon herself to find out more information about her past lives. You really get a sense for who she was then and who she is now, even though she is doing her best navigating through her new surroundings in CaliforniaCon #1: One thing that really bugged is the whole "whoa is me" thing that surrounds Luce & Daniel's relationship! I understand that he has loved her forever but it's almost like he uses that as a hold on her. Then Miles was thrown into the already messed up love saga of them and I just found that when it came to love story part of the book that it was predictable and became a bit tired after a while.Pro #2: I really adored the supporting characters in the 2nd book. I think they all just as equally played a big part in how the story played out and especially the ending. I love it when books leave you with a cliff hanger and Torment did just that! Books that are apart of a series are supposed to make you want to continue on to the next installments and Lauren Kate's endings do that. Con #2: As much as I loved that ending, The Fallen Series still just hasn't hit that big deal point that I think a lot of readers look forward to in books. I will continue on with the series but these books are not ones that I want to read back to back. Other than the way the book ends, there isn't anything within the story that makes me want to hurry up and pick up the next one. This book gives me some hope that the series gets better as it continues because Torment is much better than Fallen.Overall, I am very much interested in continuing on with the series. However, it will more than likely be on the basis of whenever I feel like picking up the next book to read and not because I feel obligated to find out what happens next.

What can I say, I loved it! Great sequel that introduces interesting new characters while fleshing out the existing ones. This is the sequel to fallen and is about a girl named Lucy who basically goes to the school and she sees this boy named Daniel and he looks oddly familiar well she figures out who really is and who she really is and it's really awesome! It wasn't quite as good as fallen but I still feel it was okay! Something that annoyed me wass that Lucy was just weird no She let somebody kiss her she kept getting in fights with Daniel throughout the whole book and it was weird but I do to say I like the new characters! My favorite character has to be Shelby Shelby is the new character sheets aren't in school and I feel like she's so cool I mean I want to be your best friend that's probably one of the reasons I give this book 4 stars instead of three or 3 1/2!!

Well this book was a slight improvement on its predecessor Fallen. I still don't agree with my past self who said this about Torment:Not as good as Fallen, but a good read nonetheless. I really like the way Luce's character has developed - strong, independent and not influenced by Daniel's proclaimed love and stories. I like how she hasn't just accepted it all at face value, and is going to know more no matter who doesn't want her to. Very impressed, can't wait for the next! This time around, I found Torment to be better than Fallen. Not by much, it certainly wasn't a 'good read' but some stuff actually HAPPENED this time around. But we still have a lot of Luce being stupid and Daniel being cryptic and both of them being infuriating. A quick summary of the 'story' which I promise is much quicker than the book itself: Daniel has taken Luce away from Sword & Cross for her own protection, dumping her in a school for the byproducts of angel and human relations, the Nephilim. There she will be safe - but wait, no she won't! Because she's Luce and she continues to walk haphazardly into danger. She has a massive lapse of trust and belief in Daniel, causing her to ignore his pleas to "stay on campus" and goes off wandering in the woods, out to meet people, on a yacht and bad things happen just about every time. But this is Luce and she doesn't learn a damn thing. She is also starting to doubt her feelings for Daniel, but this doesn't stop her thinking about him on every single page. I kid you not, he is mentioned on every single page even when he's not there. There is also the introduction of another love interest, just when you thought she'd had enough. Nope! I don't know why all these guys love her so much.So Luce does things that her stupid. Granted she is working with a lack of knowledge because no one tells her anything. And there is no good reason for keeping her in the dark when she obviously just keeps walking into danger! She should have had some trust in the people who actually know stuff, once she's been told by multiple people to stay put, but they also needed to trust her with the information. I also can't believe she'd be stupid enough to wander off campus to meet Daniel because of a note when the day before he'd told her explicitly not to leave? Wouldn't that have screamed "DANGER" to most people?I think the introduction of Miles as another love interest is a bit ridiculous and it doesn't do anything to convince me of how eternal Luce and Daniel's love is, especially when you add Daniel's history with Shelby to the mix. Despite how much we are told that Luce and Daniel's love is forever, clearly Daniel gets bored of waiting and Luce is starting to question why they're in love. Hallelujah! I am not convinced of the wonderfulness of their love, especially since I've never seen them have a meaningful conversation, they've never been anything but all over each other and it just does not seem like love to me. It seems like lust and obsession and Daniel's crazy behaviour resulting in the death of the one he loves over and over again, which he seems to have just accepted. He is absolutely useless.I still don't know why so many people are after Luce and why she is so important in the grand scheme of things, because as I see it she is a nobody, she is insignificant and yet all these random people want her? There has been little to no explanation of what is really going on and rather than leaving me intrigued, all I feel is frustrated and annoyed. I am not super impressed with Luce's questioning of their eternal love because I felt it should have happened a lot earlier. I also think the whole thing with Thanksgiving was not thought about at all by the characters involved - who is going to clean up that mess?!

This second book was probably on equal level with the first book, which I liked as well. Although the first book tended to have a bigger "end battle" (or what I sometimes like to call a "Boss Fight" like in a video game) this book built up the idea of "Why is Luce so important?" Questions are asked and left unanswered as a cliff-hanger. We do find out more information on the purpose of "The Announcers" and that seems to be the main theme of this book, as they rule Luce's curiosity. Luce wants to know if she can change the outcome of her life, and the lives of her loved ones by possibly eliminating Daniel from her life; but there's some sort of gravitational pull that draws her to him every time. While in the first book, Fallen, I liked Cam, in this book I've grown a liking towards Miles. Daniel just seems to self-absorbed and single minded for me to really appreciate his character and his choices.

First Line: "Daniel stared out at the bay." (1)
Last Line: "Would he find her? Without question. Would he save her? Always." (452)

    ------------
    Quotes:

"But when the truce was over, everything would be in Luce's hands again. Luce's hands alone." (11)

    "She loved him. But." (242)

"There, in the darkness, her heart pounding, she willed them to come out. She called on those coldest, darkest things, asking them to deliver her past, to illuminate her and Daniel's story. She called on them to solve the mystery of who he was and why he had chosen her.
Even if the truth broke her heart." (266)

"Would love be different with someone else? Was love even possible with someone else? Love was supposed to be easy, wasn't it? Then why did she feel so tormented?" (278)

I really enjoyed the world building that occurred in this novel. The first book of the series did not really enthrall me. This one however had me hooked. I did not want to stop reading. I wanted to know more and more, and luckily when I came to work that morning the next book was on my desk :)
