Stone Barrington is back in Manhattan and pleased to receive an unexpected visit from his friend and sometime lover Holly Barker, now an assistant director at the CIA. For her part, Holly is glad to leave the staid, official environs of the capital for the dining and atmosphere of New York, but her sojourn isn’t only for pleasure. An explosive incident requires her immediate attention—and Stone’s investigative expertise. But what initially appears to be a clear-cut case soon becomes increasingly complex—and dangerous. For in the secretive world of government intelligence, national interests all too often conflict with power grabs and turf wars, and extreme wealth allows even the most pursued rivals to slip through the cracks. As Stone and Holly follow the trail from London’s posh embassy district to Manhattan’s Upper East Side, they learn just how well the most cunning plans can be disguised . . . and how far some people will go to wreak vengeance.

Terrorist in New York have a plan to avenge the death of two brothers that died, (thank the Gods that be), in a previous book. I have always loved the Stone Barrington books. The thing that never ceases to amaze me about this series though is the unlimited resources, financial, agency support, you name it, that is readily available to these people. also the amount of alcohol they can put away and remain functioning. Oh well, it's just a story and a break from reality. Still love the books.

This installment of the Stone Barrington series prominently features Holly Barker. She and Stone are regularly hobnobbing with the President and First Lady, who is also the Director of the CIA. There are many fancy dinners and explosions, almost simultaneously, but a very thin plot. The story consists primarily of phone calls, travel arrangements, hellos, and goodbyes. It was a fast, easy read that left me wanting more.

Not bad..Stuart seems to be on a roll with better stories lately, although this seemed more like a Holly Barker novel than a Stone Barrington novel. Pretty basic spin on a terrorist plot in the States where Barker and Stone team up to stop a female hell-bent on revenge for her family. Another one recommended for the beach...

Pure claptrap. If you like reading about cocktail parties, fancy restaurants, jumping in and out of bed and very little substance, you might like this waste of time. I was generous with two stars.

I listened to this book and immediately knew that I'd missed a nuclear event in Los Angeles and this plot depends upon that one. So, it wasn't much fun. Stone doesn't do well as a character with all the national players and we missed Dino until the very end. And, apparently, Elaine has gone to the happy cook's place. I'll have to double back and see other books to catch up on Stone's life.

Synopsis: Stone Barrington, Holly Barker, Dino Bacchetti, Viv DeCarlo and the rest of the crew all seem to be in a good place in their careers and their relationships. Into this piece of tranquility yet another terrorist emerges, threatening both Great Britain and the US.Review: More thriller than mystery, this book is exciting. One aspect I really like is that Woods doesn't re-hash previous books or describe reoccurring characters again and again. Several previous story lines are ended and new ones are begun. The plot is interesting, providing both tension and humor.

In London, Jasmine Shazazz, an international terrorist, sets off a bomb that kills the British foreign secretary in revenge for the killing of her two brothers in a plot (foiled by Stone Barrington) to assassinate the Presidents of the U.S. and Mexico. Her murderous spree is just beginning.Holly Barker, assistant director of the CIA and Stone’s lover, is charged with finding and eliminating Jasmine before she can cause any more mayhem. Knowing of Stone’s previous involvement, the director of the CIA asks him to join Holly as a special consultant in the hunt for Shazazz. In the true fashion of the Stone Barrington novels, Stuart Woods reintroduces the reader to Stone’s world of power and wealth, where the stakes are always high and evil is there to be discovered and conquered. This is arguably one of the best of the Barrington series: a mass market novel true to the ideals of the detective mystery genre. This is a comfortable read with short chapters and a bare bones method of storytelling that says much with as little as possible. While the characters underlying sexual tension leads inevitably to bedroom scenes, it’s done with taste, again providing just sufficient detail to draw the scene without devolving into explicit details.Stuart is truly a master of the written word.
