About this audiobook

With a new Beauty and the Beast movie hitting theaters in spring 2017, it’s time to catch up on all things Beastly. Find out what it was like for the beast in Alex Flinn’s contemporary retelling of the classic tale.

I am a beast.

A beast. Not quite wolf or bear, gorilla or dog but a horrible new creature who walks upright—a creature with fangs and claws and hair springing from every pore. I am a monster.

You think I'm talking fairy tales? No way. The place is New York City. The time is now. It's no deformity, no disease. And I'll stay this way forever—ruined—unless I can break the spell.

Yes, the spell, the one the witch in my English class cast on me. Why did she turn me into a beast who hides by day and prowls by night? I'll tell you. I'll tell you how I used to be Kyle Kingsbury, the guy you wished you were, with money, perfect looks, and the perfect life. And then, I'll tell you how I became perfectly . . . beastly.

Re-read this as an adult and I think I appreciate it for different reasons...lol
Definitely the kind of book to read if you'd like a simple, modern retelling of beauty and the beast

Chris Patton was a great narrator and I enjoyed this retelling of beauty and the beast. There were some issues with the audio book cutting in and out and the epilogue ended mid word, so I think it cut part of it off.

I liked this more than I thought I would. The author wrote with humour and compassion. Not perfect from a moral or literary perspective, but an entertaining quick read. Some mild language and references to teenage promiscuity.

I really love reading fairytales and fairytale retellings, so with this being a modern retelling of my all time favourite fairytale Beauty and the Beast I knew I had to read it. This book has recently been made into a movie which looks pretty good so I wanted to get it read before the film comes out. I?ve heard nothing but good reviews for this book and I like the majority enjoyed it.Kyle Kingsbury is beautiful on the outside but ugly on the inside. All that matters to him is looks and he torments and pranks ?the ugly kids? at school. His most recent prank is on Kendra the typical Goth girl at school. He invites her to go to the school dance and plans to humiliate her by turning up with the hottest girl in school and announcing to everyone that he never intended to be her escort. This time Kyle has messed with the wrong girl. Turns out that Kendra?s a witch and she casts a spell on Kyle to make his appearance reflect how hideous he is on the inside. However if he can find someone who can see the beauty inside him despite his appearance, get them to fall in love with him and him her and seal the deal with a kiss he will be returned to his former self. He has two years to break the spell, but lets face it how can anyone ever love someone whose so perfectly beastly? This book is a fun read whilst at the same time hitting some of the classic important issues raised in the Beauty and the Beast tale. This is a story of finding yourself, learning what?s important, and realising that beauty isn?t skin deep. I loved how Alex Flinn made this book modern and current using internet dating, being homeschooled and other such things whilst also keeping some of the things that makes the original so special and magical like the rose and the mirror. This is a really great book which I would recommend to everyone who loves fairytales young or old. I recently ordered off Amazon Alex Flinn?s latest fairytale retelling of Sleeping Beauty- A Kiss in Time which I?m very excited to read. A fun read that addresses some serious issues. 4 stars.

This was a happy accident, me picking up this book. I don't usually go for the "Modern Fairy Tale Retelling", which is, of course, what this is. They usually read far too much like Teen Romances, and that is one of my least favorite genres. But "Beastly" is excellent. It's a modern retelling of (of course) Beauty & the Beast. The Beast is a high school prep-boy with too much money and time on his hands. A goth chick he humiliates and embarrasses turns him into the Beast, revealing herself to be a witch. And with that, starts one of the most interesting retellings I've read. The story is very true to it's fairy tale origins, including the most interesting facet, that of the father who'll give his daughter up to the beast and why the beast is so fond of roses. The story is interspersed with excerpts from the Chat Room the "Beast" visits online, where they speak to other fairy tale "transformed" creatures, including the Frog Prince and the Little Mermaid. While the story is a quick read, it is delightful. And I really liked how it connected to its fairy tale origins, but still kept the modern aspect. Best of all, I liked how it questioned the original fairy tale, and came up with reasons. Why does the Beast have no family to speak of? Why does Beauty's father give her up? Why does the Witch single out the Beast? And it gives great answers to these questions. I didn't expect to like "Beastly", but I recommend it to fairy tale lovers of all kinds.

This book was amazing. I mean, even if I wasn't an all-out Disney freak, I'd still have fallen head-over-heals in love with it. This is literally a modern day version of Beauty and the Beast. Instead of a full-of-himself prince, our main character, the "beast", is a snobby popular junior who lets his looks get to his head. The rose incorperation, as it was in a case in the Disney movie, is represented by a corsage that was bought "accidently" for the dance. Two petals fall off, so Kyle, later known as Adrian, is given two years to find true love(what else!?). But all in all, this book will definetly not dissapoint you! ;)

Flinn puts a modern twist on the classic "Beauty and the Beast" story. While the story line sticks closely to the well-known story, Beast's father is television news anchor and Beauty's father is drug-user. The Beast is Kyle, once the prince of his school, and Beauty is Lindy. Kyle is turned into a beast by a witch and he has two years to earn Lindy's love and break the spell. A very entertaining read, even for those familiar with the tale.

This is a very well written modern retelling of Beauty and the Beast from the perspective of a 16 year old boy turned into a beast living in New York. This story has several twists within it and the author does a great job keeping the reader interested. I loved this book and did not want to put it done until I was done!

One of my goals this year is to read some retellings. I first saw Beastly 10 (?) years ago when I was a fan of Alex Pettyfer in "I Am Number Four".
The movie adaptation was good, but this book is kind VERY disappointing. The writing style sounds too, uh, "girly" and whiney. (Doesn't sound like written from a guy's perspective at all.) The pace is too slow and there are lots of repetitive lines.
Even when the Beast took a change of heart about his outlook on appearance at the end, it doesn't change the fact that he is manipulative and selfish, just like his dismissive father. He is also as creepy like Edward Cullen; both of them are fond of watching their love interests sleeping.
(To me, only Kendra is the redeeming factor here.)
I strongly suggest you read another retelling of Beauty and the Beast.

This book got my attention at the first page. I love how it truly was a modern version of the Beauty and the Beast story I grew up with. It was also fun to read the chat room conversations that had maybe 3 other characters from other fairytales interact with one another. All in all it was a great book.

I really loved some of the other retellings of Beauty and the Beast so when I saw a preview for this movie and then found out it was a book first I went out and found it. It was a little slow in the beginning but it stuck so well to the Beauty and the Beast story. It handled modernizing the story really well.

This is a modern re-telling of Beauty and the Beast. It's not the best re-telling I've read, but it kept my attention. The characters were a little dull, except for Kendra, who, apparently, appears in later books. If you like a fast, fairy-tale-like read, this one's for you.

This is the first retelling of Beauty and the Beast that I've seen written from Beast's perspective, so I give points for that. But I could never recommend it to my nieces or nephews because it treats teen sex like it's ok; or worse, expected.

This was my second Nook serial read. And, again, not a book that I would have picked out for myself. Definitely a YA book but I enjoyed reading a chapter each morning with my first cup of tea. It's the classic story of Beauty and the Beast set in present day time in NYC. Very rich, handsome young man who's ugly on the inside messes with the wrong person and before he knows what happened, the ugliness is now on the outside forever unless he figures out how to break the spell.

A modern retelling of Beauty and the Beast, puts snobby, wealthy privileged teenager, Alex, in his place. A witch disgusted by his treatment of a fellow student turns him into a hairy beast. Of course, we know how the story ends, he finds that there is more to life than wealth and good looks.
