About this audiobook
New York Times bestselling author Dana Stabenow's latest, Bad Blood, finds Kate Shugak entangled in a bitter tribal rivalry and murder
In Alaska, one hundred years of bad blood between the villages of Kushtaka and Kuskulana come to a boil when the body of a young Kushtaka ne'er-do-well is found wedged in a fish wheel. Sergeant Jim Chopin's prime suspect is a Kuskulana man who is already in trouble in both villages for falling in love across the river. But when the suspect disappears, members of both tribes refuse to speak to Jim. When a second murder that looks suspiciously like payback occurs, Jim has no choice but to call in Kate Shugak for help. This time, though, her Park relationships may not be enough to sort out the truth hidden in the tales of tragedy and revenge.

- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5It wasn't awful, but it was very disappointing. ...Also, it absolutely should not be shelved in horror. (A lot of books in horror shouldn't be there, but this is the most egregrious example I've seen.) It's a romance and should be shelved there. My dissatisfaction doesn't stem from the romance, I just have a problem with the rampant mis-categorization going on in horror. ...(mild spoilers)...The cover text gave me the impression that the main narrative was going to follow Sasha's search for the rest of her werewolf black ops team, with the likelihood that they would be re-united and continue working as a unit (military or otherwise) to resolve this novel. That possibility was quickly dismissed....That's the story I would've preferred. I'm a huge fan of such team interaction, whether there's a romance nested somewhere in it or not. Instead the plot shrank to focus on two people against the world, with some non-combatant back-up assistance here and there. (However, this book does suggest that Sasha and Max could have a team with four other wolfs in subsequent novels.) ...I don't have a problem with romance and / or sex in my fiction -- in fact, I love it when it's well integrated -- but the whole plot de-railed about halfway through to give Sasha and Max plenty of time to screw. I also don't care for the way the romance is framed as that all-consuming desire and attraction even thought the characters have just met. I know that's a popular trope, but I'm not a fan....Within that all consuming attraction, I was happy that Sasha made herself stay a step back. Her world just turned upside down, and she's not going to jump into a life-long commitment no matter how much she likes Max....So the romance completely de-railed the plot about halfway through, but when the plot eventually gets moving again, it never quite gets back on the rails. A lot of worldbuilding details are crammed into the last quarter of the novel -- which you do expect in the first installment of a series. However, the details 1) continue to overturn *everything* that Sasha knew and 2) come too thick, too quickly. The overall effect left me disoriented in this new universe....I'm not going to continue with the series. I prefer that romance be nested seamlessly within the plot, and I didn't like how isolated from the rest of the narrative that left Sasha and Max. ...Ultimately, while the premise of the book isn't bad, it doesn't grab me either.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5First I need to say I thought it was me. Next I need to say it was the book. I picked up another right after this one by another author and I ended up staying up to read the whole thing. It was well written, interesting, great plot, characters that lived. In short everything this was not. It was the book.
Like the last book of Stabenow's, I had a very hard time getting into this. The last book, as much as I love Kate and Liam, was like wrestling with a grizzly during breakup. Dana Stabenow is on my buy without reading list. I am probably going to remove it from the list after the last two books.
I would have given this a 3 [barely more like a rounded up 2.85] except Dana is now doing the draw it out for more than one book cliff hanger endings. I hate those. The ending was a 1. Flat out if you don't plan to read the next book, don't bother. It was a serious temptation to make the entire book a 1 but I've read worse. They need a rating that says "Should never have been a book" instead of 1
I don't expect a plot to be tidy but I do expect it to not make me have to buy the next book because some twit of a writer can't finish it up properly in one book. I call those twits the "I can't write but I can draw one book out and make a LOT of money from it" writers. They take one plot, meander around, don't bother to end it but leave you hanging and continue the plot in the next. By the time you finish all 7 books in their series [if you last that long] You suddenly realize you read half a book.
Dana's previous books were solid, well written, funny, serious, and, while in a series, could be read as a stand alone. Now? She's one of the masses that are not on my buy before reading list.
It, like the last, jumped all over the place and seemed as if I were reading a couple short stories that were interwoven. The actually plot seems to start halfway thru the book. The beginning was simply set up and boring set up at that. It didn't add anything to any of the characters and I couldn't see the Kate, Jim or Mutt I fell in love with.
If she hadn't been better at writing before this, she would have got a 3 but she's better than this. - Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5If I ruled the world, authors would be forced to attend Grammar Boot Camp, where they would learn that just because spell-check doesn't flag a word, that doesn't mean it works in that sentence.
Publishers who scant on proofreaders would be shot on sight. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Two small towns, one big feud, a pair of star-crossed lovers, and several murders. If you've been reading the series, you'll want this. If you haven't, start earlier. (Although it would stand alone reasonably well, I think.)
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Banks produced a intriguingly unique story that combines the government black ops with that of the supernatural world. She entered a whole new world of the unknown, to make a interesting story of the government trying to use the supernatural community to make the ultimate weapon. I enjoyed this story, and find myself willing to read the next book. I was not a fan of other writings from LA Banks, and this story has allowed me to explore LA Banks from another story and appreciate her writing.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Very complicated world building and plot and I have to say it lost me a few times. Sasha and her pack were infected by rogue werewolves They now take meds to avoid going rogue themselves and continue to work as soldiers for the US army. But were they deliberately infected? Is the army trying to build super soldiers? Are all werewolves rogue? The army has made several connections with other worldly creatures - Shamans and vampires. The Vampires have told them that all werewolves are evil and they've been operating under that premise and then Sasha meets a werewolfe with a different tale to spin. Everyone seems so oddly naive here, believing only their limited world view and astonished to meet someone outside it. Sasha meets 2 wolves - the second one a Shadow Wolf, another breed again. She and the shadow wolf are of the same clan and he wants to mate her. Much sex ensues. I liked the characters that I met, but found the book confusing and the villians, as always, card board cutouts. This was not a wall banger, it's worth reading, but it's not a keeper and I doubt I'll read the next in the series either.
