I have mixed feelings about this book. One thing I like about the book is the plot. When Chato realized that Novio Boy did not know when his birthday was because he was from the pound, he automatically tried to make him feel better and gave him his own birthday party. This can be connected to young children and how some are adopted and may feel out of place when it comes to things like birthday parties. One reason I did not like the book is the writing. As I was reading, I did not feel like the book flowed well together. During many parts of the story I felt like the text was very choppy and bounced from one topic to the next. A second reason why I like the book is the illustrations. Each illustration was full of action and color which can be good for young children.

lthough Chato and the Party Animals was not my favorite story, the artwork spoke to me the most. I also felt that it would be most appealing to students. The artwork is colorful and interesting. It is done in acrylic on scratchboard. The story is about Chato and his friend Novio boy. Novio boy feels lonely and sad because he has no family and he doesn’t know when his birthday is. His best friend Chato throws him a surprise birthday party, but Novio boy is nowhere to be found. In the end he is found and they enjoy the party together. The book also includes spanish words which would make a great lesson for the students so they can learn some new words. but the focus is on the beautiful and detailed artwork.

Chato is a very fortunate cat who has a fantastic birthday party, but his friend Novio Boy has never had a birthday party. Chato decides to throw him a surprise birthday party and Novio Boy is so grateful and appreciates how much his friend loves him. This books theme is of friendship and emphasizes hispanic culture through language and art in the text. *Pura Belpre Winner

While at a party, Chato finds out that his best friend, Novio Boy, is sad because he came from the pound and does not have a family to throw him a birthday party. So, Chato decides to throw him a party. In the end, they all have a great time and Novio Boy comes to realize that he has had family all along, his friends. This book had great illustrations (winner of Pura Belpre Award), included a glossary to translate terms which were in Spanish, and also, was fun to read. This book would make a great addition to all classroom libraries.

When Chato discovers Novio Boy, an orphan, has never had a birthday, he sets out to plan the best birthday party in the history of el barrio. A light read with likeable characters, use this book to expose kids to some common elements of Mexican culture as well as themes concerning brotherhood and generosity.

Chato throws a surprise party for his best friend Novio Boy, who was born in the pound and never knew his birthday. I don't know. Would Latino students enjoy the Spanglish and the barrio setting? Probably. I wish the same story could be told using human being children in the barrio instead of the sleazy looking cats and dogs. And I'm confused by the rules of this animal universe. Cats, dogs and mice are all friends, yet Chato threatens a dog blow-up doll and orders canaries on top of the birthday cake? I'm not a fan of the illustrations either, which I found sloppy and distracting.

Personal Response:This is a cute, comical book that illustrates the value of friendship. I have read several of the Chato books and I really enjoy them. I appreciate that the author includes a glossary for the Spanish words that he uses.Curricular Connection:This book is a great read-aloud for story time.

This was an interesting book for me to read. I like the way there is a glossary int he front to help the children reading. This is great for books incorporating different languages. This is a great book for 3rd grade through 5th grade.

Chato, a cool cat, throws a birthday party for his friend, Novio Boy. After discovering that Novio Boy is from the pound and had never celebrated a birthday, Chato rounds up party favors like flea combs and collars with bells, makes a piñata out of newspaper and an empty cat food box and other exciting things. In the meantime, Chato forgets to invite Novio Boy himself, whom he is throwing the party for. This event leads to a neighborhood search. Finally, the animals give up and decide Novio Boy is lost. As they sadly reminisce with untouched water balloons and a mouse-colored cake, Novio Boy shows up, with two new friends. The animals rejoice and the party begins.
