About this audiobook
Kate McCall's husband is killed by her teenage son, Luke, in a tragic bow hunting accident--an incident that sets into motion a series of events, culminating in a dramatic, life and death confrontation with a gang of killers. Included in the gang is Kate's first love - an ex-con who himself is struggling to persuade his former "colleagues" that he really did lose the heist money.
Peter Leonard displays remarkable maturity for a first-time novelist in both the language of his protagonists and plotting the story - the twists and turns of a love affair, an unrequited crush and a kidnapping/extortion plot complement a tightly-drawn, intimate cast of memorably quick and dim-witted characters all set around the Leonard family's home turf of Detroit. QUIVER marks the entry of a powerful new voice in crime fiction - and a masterful and powerful debut.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I very much enjoyed this book. It's very well written, even if some chapters had an abundance of whichever word took the author's fancy at the time. The pace was perfect, and the background story wasn't too sparse, and not too overwhelming.Recommended read. :)
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Peter Leonard's first novel and I enjoyed it as a whole. Very slow moving to start off but I did get a sense of loss and how do I pick up the pieces and move on after this tragedy happens to the family. Once things get going get ready for a bunch of supporting characters and no matter what you think about them they all collide in a somewhat suprising and satisfing ending. I liked it and looking forward to what he comes up with next.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Not my thing,
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Blah. Okay, maybe not utter blah, but that’s the thought that comes to mind every time LibraryThing sends me a ‘you haven’t reviewed this book’ reminder. God bless the Early Reviewer scheme, it’s made my mailbox a happy, happy place, but sometimes… Blah, I say.So… well, the pacing was well-handled, and for a thriller, that’s one of the first things that will fall down if anything does. There were enjoyable elements to the book (and a few pages where I thought Peter Leonard had some serious writing chops), such as the cohesively written family unit, but I found it slow to get into; not because of the pace, but because too much was predictable and – the most fatal of flaws to a veteran crime/thriller fiction reader – stereotypical, and in the end I simply put this down without finishing it, just over the halfway point... (I was trying not to be an impatient, unfair reader) and cannot face picking it up again. I think the book’s main flaw for me is that it reads like a second draft of something that needed a shot of inspiration and a third polishing. I might pick up something else by Peter Leonard, but not for a while. And not this one.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I see a lot of reviews here comparing the author’s writing to that of his father – I have never read anything by Elmore Leonard so I can’t comment on that. This book is a fast paced, fun to read thriller. It centres around the attempts of a gang of fairly random criminals to separate the heroine, Kate, from both her newly inherited fortune and her son Luke, who has some issues going on, having accidentally killed his father with a cross-bow. Oh, and one of the bad guys happens to be her former lover. The story was fairly straightforward, it was easy to understand what was happening and but there were enough twists and turns to keep me wanting to know what would happen next. I would not say this was a great book through for several reasons. First, any book that bases its premise on an unfortunate cross-bow accident is going to be a bit far fetched for my tastes. Second, there was far too much tell and little show. While the plot moved forwards quickly the characters were not developed, and while I wanted to know what would happen to them to satisfy my curiosity, I can’t really say I cared. There is potential here and this is a first book, so possibly the author may improve on its flaws in his later work. As it stands though, this is little more than fill-in-the-time reading, the type of novel that will probably sell better in airport terminal bookshops than anywhere else.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I enjoyed this book and the only problems I had with it was the fact it was aimed at an American audience, being English I had a problem understanding some of the words used in the story.Of course it may be just me and an age thing! On the whole I liked the characters,as has been said before,Kate was obviously a superwoman before she married and had Luke ! Hope they caught up with Jack at the end ! Maybe they should put an index in this book showing explanation of some of the slang used .
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5A good read but quite fomulaic and just a tad(!) far fetched. It's unfortunate that the relationship with his father is plastered over the book as the comparison is unfair - he'll maybe develop with later novels but I can't say this one has made a lasting impact.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5‘Quiver’ is appropriately named for the bow hunting prevalent throughout the novel. Accidentally, Luke has killed his father in a bow-hunting accident and the novel starts seven months after the event. His mother Kate, whilst not holding him responsible is concerned for him. At the same time an ex-con from Kate’s past, Jack, comes into her life. Luke takes off for their lodge in Northern Michigan, finding everything difficult and Jack and Kate follow him.Meanwhile, there are other criminals interested in all the money Kate has been left and they pursue the threesome. What unfolds is a fast paced thriller with some surprising and also predictable events. Whilst clearly well written, ‘Quiver’ takes a while to settle into. There are great characters and some fantastic narrative but there are times where it seemed that Peter Leonard was already thinking ahead without clarifying current events and I became a little lost in two different places.Peter Leonard can definitely write and I'd certainly be happy to recommend this novel and read more of his work. The second half is quick and rapid, thoroughly engaging the reader and more than makes up for a slightly slower beginning. There are predictable elements but I think this is unavoidable within this genre.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Kate McCall's husband dies in an hunting accident. Kate's son, Luke accidentally shots his father with an arrow. As Kate is trying to cope with the loss of her husband and the guilt her son carries, an old friend walks back into her life. Jack is an ex-con. He has a lot of people after him right now, because they think he has lost the heist money. The events that take place will make Kate and her son, Luke's relationship stronger than it has even been in this skillfully plotted strongline of a book called Quiver. I thought Quiver was a good first book for Mr. Peter Leonard. It moved very quickly and easily. The ending was a surprise to me. I enjoyed this fact, when the unexpected happens in a book. It shows that author's writing style to be so amazing that Mr. Leonard can take the reader all the way through a story without the reader knowing or figuring out what is going to happen next. It makes me want to read more novels by this author. If Quiver is any indication of what's to come from Peter Leonard than readers are in for a treat. So make sure to check out Quiver to see what people are talking about and make sure to add Mr. Leonard to your list of favorite authors. You won't be sorry you did.
