      I loved this book and have already recommended it to my friends. Now I can't wait to read The Mill River Recluse. The first chapter had me intrigued and I couldn't put the book down. Emily and Rose had a complicated relationship, they had a falling out and couldn't repair their friendship. Emily and Rose grew up in the same household, but were complete opposites. Josie, their mother, went to great lengths to bring her girls back together. I never guessed who was going to waiting in the hospital room, it was a complete surprise. Finding out about Andy was heartbreaking and I understood what caused the sisters to hate each other. I loved reading about the other people in town who had minor roles in the book. Can't wait to read more books about Mill River.

      A bookstore, mothers, sisters, aunts, family secrets.THE MILL RIVER REDEMPTION is a wonderful, cozy, book that combines family, the love of books, and a small town and turns all of those into a book you won't want to stop reading.Josie DiSantis had to move from New York back to her roots in Mill River, Vermont, after her husband was killed in a fire that destroyed their home. Luckily she and her daughters survived and had a loving aunt to take them in.Mill River is a town that I would LOVE to live in. It seemed to be the perfect place to grow up, the perfect place to raise your children, and the perfect place to return to.The only thing that wasn't perfect was the relationship between Josie's daughters, Rose and Emily. Something happened that tore their once close, sisterly relationship apart and had them estranged for years. Josie tried to get them to reconcile all during her life and even after her death. Josie had devised a perfect plan described in her will that would hopefully bring the girls back together. Would this work? Nothing else had.Josie was a strong character, Aunt Ivy was all the warmth anyone could ask for, and Rose and Emily were total opposites. Mill River and its residents knew everyone's business, but the town had the kindest folks ever. I really enjoyed THE MILL RIVER REDEMPTION because of the homey storyline and the beautifully described characters.This is the first book I have read by Darcie Chan, and her writing style is inviting, descriptive, and simply superb. I didn't want to stop reading because I wanted to see how the plan Josie devised was working out as well as wanting to be a part of that town with all those delightful residents. Don't miss reading THE MILL RIVER REDEMPTION if you like cozy, heartwarming reads.This is going to be one of my FAVORITE reads of this year. I didn't want it to end. I wanted to spend more time with the characters. :) Even the cover is alluring and captivating. 5/5This book was given to me free of charge and without compensation by the publisher in return for an honest review.

      had been looking forward to the Mill River Redemption by Darcie Chan. Maybe my expectations were too high. Except for the boy, I didn’t like that way that the main characters behaved. They seemed to care only about themselves. The nine year old boy was the only one that I would care to meet if they were real people. Also I felt betrayed by the strange and contrived ending. Josie De Santi moves to Mill River after a tragic fire. She lost her husband and had no job and had two daughters, Rosie and Emily. The two girls were inseparable at the beginning but they started on different paths. The story switches back and forth from present to the past so that you can learn what tragedy caused Emily and Rosie to become bitter enemies. One of the themes is forgiveness but seemed too difficult for either one of the women to come to terms with that. Rosie was an alcoholic, she had been a wild girl sneaking out with her friends late at night and caring more about clothes than feelings. It was difficult to understand how she did not feel her sister’s pain after the tragedy. It is strange to think that her son turned out to be so caring.Oh, I did like two minor characters a lot, Father O’Brien a former spoon stealer and the young woman who prepared and sold potions. I wish the story centered around them instead. But the part that I did not like the most was the ending. I think that when you read a book, you begin to develop a trust for author. But this story seemed so unreal and the ending so contrived that the trust was broken for me.

      The Mill River Redemption is a simple story with a lot of depth, and has strong themes of family love and forgiveness. It is truly a heartwarming story.December 1983 – Josi DiSanti is starting over with her two daughters, 4-year-old Rose, and 2-year-old Emily. Her husband, Tony, had just died tragically in a fire, and she and her girls are on their way to live with her Aunt Ivy in Mill River, a quaint little town in Vermont. Josi doesn’t even know her Aunt Ivy, but she was the only family she had left. 2013 – After the death of Josi, a letter is read to Rose and Emily, instructing them to repair their relationship with each other. They must locate a key that will open Josi’s safe deposit box, and they will then inherit a substantial amount from her estate. It was Josi's hope that Rose and Emily would come out of this experience as real sisters again, to overcome the unpleasantness between them, and share a bond they once knew as sisters. It was also Josi’s hope that Rose and Emily would uncover good memories to help take away the bad. However, there was a catch. They must uproot themselves and move back to Mill River, at least temporarily, to begin this treasure hunt for their inheritance. And the story unfolds as the past mingles with the present and the author uses many layers to weave this tale of two estranged sisters, who have lost that strong bond they once knew. The complex characters or Rose and Emily were strongly portrayed. The author did a marvelous job getting into the hearts and minds of all the characters, even the minor ones. Aunt Ivy was an endearing character that captured my heart, and certainly brought life to the story. The story had a few twists and turns, and an ending that totally took me by surprise. One negative comment – The middle of the story seemed to stall a bit, and my interest declined somewhat, but the last part of the story did pick up and I became fully engaged again.The Mill River Redemption is a light and easy read. My rating is 4 stars and I’ll be watching for more books by this author. Truly well done!I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.       While “The Mill River Redemption” certainly functions as a stand-alone, reading “The Mill River Recluse” first will provide background and greater clarity for some of the events and characters in the new story.In “The Mill River Redemption,” sisters Rose and Emily DiSanti have been estranged for many years; their mother, in an attempt force the two women to reconcile, has concocted a desperate scheme that brings her grown daughters back to Mill River for the summer. The story alternates between present-day events and background chapters that show Josie living in Mill River with her daughters. As the two girls grow up, the reader gains insight into the family dynamics and comes to understand the bitter estrangement that has separated the once-inseparable sisters. Although everything unfolds in a most predictable manner [even the huge plot twist is not a surprise; readers can easily figure it out long before the big reveal], “The Mill River Redemption” is an enjoyable, easy summer read.
