Never expecting to inherit a title, Tristan Wemyss has spent the majority of his adult life in service to the Crown. As the newly minted Earl of Trentham, he finds himself responsible for numerous estates and several elderly relatives, but requires a bride or he will forfeit the inheritance necessary for their upkeep. Determined to avoid the matchmakers of the ton and choose his own wife, Tristan decides on his charming and vivacious neighbor, Leonora Carling. Now if only he can convince her to give up her independent ways…

The Lady Chosen has incredible potential both in terms of the romance and the suspense plot. Unfortunately, the story is excessively drawn out; the writing is overwrought and the sex scenes (while hot as heck) are as purple as they come.

Tristan and Leonora are both appealing characters even though he can be a tad overbearing, and she has one or two (make that five or six) TSTL moments. Their courtship develops at a steady pace from attraction to intimacy to love, and is ultimately satisfying although it could have concluded more quickly.

Likewise, the secondary storyline involving the mysterious man attempting to break into Leonora's family home is intriguing with some exciting actions scenes. However, it is unnecessarily protracted and the eventual explanation for the crime veers off into the ridiculous.

Despite the issues with her writing, there is something about Laurens's storytelling that has me returning to her novels again and again. The basic premise of a group of military men returning home after war to seek solace in the arms of a woman they love is very enticing, and I look forward to seeing how the other members of the Bastion Club meet their matches.

    Loved the story.
But didn't really like the narrator. There were times when I couldn't tell if Tristan or Leonora was speaking, becauseTristan's voice sounded like a woman most of the time. Most of the men sounded like women. And Tristan was a big strapping man so his voice wasn't right at all. Actually those of you who like Davina Porter will probably like this narrator, Jill Tanner, as she sounds very much like her except sometimes she narrates in slow motion. I didn't particularly like her. And I couldn't speed up the narration because from 1.20, which was what I was listening on, to 1.50 was too fast then. I believe that there should be a speed of 1.10 and 1.30.
I will be continuing the series because they are included in the membership. If I had to pay for them I wouldn't have continued because of the narrator.

I adore this series!! Stephanie Laurens is a master at the Alpha Rake!! I love the men pursuing their ladies!!

What a great story! I laughed and cried many times! Such wonderful writing and really engaging characters!! I love this authors work!!

I adore this whole series and can not wait to see each man get his lady. It is a bit formula with the alpha male who is often chased finding a lady he wants and being forced to pursue her. But formula works that why we love it!

Each book has an add but of intrigue that draws you in. And Stephanie Laurens knows how to deliver the steam!!

I am currently on a Regency kick and this one was terrific!!

I read this some years back and remember liking it but not as much as "A Fine Passion". Somehow I read that one first and I really liked the heroine and the relationship building. This had some of the same independent spirit but seemed like the women didn't really know how to function on her own. The other had been running the estates for years.

There is this side plot of trying to kill her out of her house and the hero saves the day. What got me was they didn't put two and two together fast enough and discounted the "accidents". I'm so over not paying attention.

Read it a while back... probably before 2009 but not sure.

The book begins with the former spies for the crown meeting after Waterloo and banding together as the Bastion Club to take control of what comes next in their lives. The publisher's blurb gives clues as to the plot. This is the first in the series, and is not the strongest, but is a very interesting read, nonetheless. It does stand up to the rereading test, as well as the "filched by friends" test. I gave up and got the audio, so I could keep a copy.Jill Tanner does a good job as narrator, but I would have preferred a baritone.

Beginning of the Bastion Club series. Regency England. Tristan is overseeing the renovations on the new Bastion Club's meeting home, and the next door neighbor, Leonora, captures his fancy. There's a mystery man trying to scare Leonora and her family from their home, so of course, Tristan has to step in with his Bastion Club contacts, to solve the mystery and rescue the maiden.

The first in a series of seven books following a group of titled gentlemen who form the Bastion Club. Tristian (an Earl) finds that he has to find a wife within the year or lose all the money that comes with the title. He meets Leonora (she lives next door to the club) and find himself helping her unravel a mystery and falling in love. This was a fun story and nice begining to the series. It did get a little long (the book is about 430 pages long). There were also a LOT of characters to remember (including members of the club which we'll get to know better in future books). But overall, I liked this book.

As always Stephanie Laurens has written an enthralling story that pulls into the mystery of why a young woman and her family are being besieged by burglars. I love the premise of the series. Eight gentlemen that have come into titles that they never expected to inherit decide to take their own fate into their hands and find wives that they can live with. It is funny how these men view the marriage mart and the manipulation of the mothers that are determined to find titled husbands for their daughters. These men all have one thing in common they have been spies for their country in the war with Napoleon. With the defeat at Waterloo by British forces Napoleon has been exiled once again and these men have come home. The first to find the wife he didn't expect is Tristan Wemyss, Earl of Trentmont. He purchases a house in which these colleagues can plan their strategies for finding the woman that will fit into their lives. They plan to make the house into a club that no one else knows about. Tristan finds that woman that lives next door to the club very fascinating. He is drawn to her. When she comes next door to confront him for causing her family such problems, he of course has no idea what she is talking about, he decides that he must put a stop to the danger that she faces. Tristan is that alpha male that is so rare in today’s society. He is born of conquerors and as such can’t bear to see a weaker person in danger from ruffians. He is also very clever and ever the planner. He doesn't realize that fate has just put his future wife in his path. It is fun to watch as he begins his seduction of Miss Leonora Carling. Ms. Laurens does a great job of describing his confusion and exasperation with Leonora. He comes to see how to keep her safe and still let her have her adventure.Leonora Carling has managed her life and the lives of her brother and uncle for over a decade. She is independent, intelligent and more than a little aggressive. She isn't afraid of much and thinks that she can handle more than she really is able too. She is daring and brave but not always wise. She does keep Tristan on his toes for most of the story though. It was nice that she was able to find someone to help with the invasion of her home and safety as well as make her realize that she didn't have to do everything herself. I will say that Tristan was much more patient with her than most men would have been. This is a wonderful story that kept guessing right up to the end what the burglar wanted and who the burglar was. I love the international connection. I guess that most wouldn't think about espionage as far as medicine and patents were concerned during this time period. This is also a nice love story about two people that need someone they can lean on and trust. Before are scarred by their pasts and unwilling to easily trust those around them. There are plenty of wonderful love scenes between these two. They can barely keep their hands to themselves. I can’t recommend Ms. Laurens books highly enough. She is a great storyteller and I look forward to each new book she writes.
