About this audiobook
John Locke

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I must say that I am actually impressed with this book. This isn't the kind of thing that I would normally read and not the kind of book that would draw my attention. But it did, and I'm glad I read it. It was a friend of mine who recommended me the book and when he did, he didn't give me many details about it other than "in the worst case scenario, the book is very cheap. The electronic version of it costs only .99 cents". Well, for a cheap book, it was actually more than I could have expected. The plot is not anything mindblowing, the characters are not completely out of reality. The story is fast-paced. You know, those kinds of stories that chain one occurrence to another one and, when you realize it, everything is connected. The main character, Donovan Creed, is a contract killer, former FBI agent and awfully sarcastic, which gives the book an interesting sense of humor. In spite of initially looking like "the perfect man" in the best of any of Dan Brown's main characters style, he is very easy to like. The story is very enjoyable (even though it's not the kind of thing I would want to read twice) and simple. If you're looking for a nice action book, just go for this one!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I haven’t made up my mind yet about how to classify the Donovan Creed series. They are part spoof, part comedy, part James Bond, and part warning of Homeland Security egregious power plays. Donovan lives in a cell where he experiments with new torture weapons (“When I’m in Virginia, I sleep in a prison cell. When I’m anywhere else for more than a day or two, I generally break into the homes of strangers and sleep in their attics,” seeing how much he can take and survive, has a giant friend, Quinn, who looks like the Hulk after passing through a trash compactor, ostensibly works for Homeland Security killing terrorists (and which is often called upon to clean up after Donovan,) but also subcontracts out to a group of little people (Hugo and Victor) engaged in social experiments that involve killing, and Sal, a crime syndicate boss.
“Victor was born with serious respiratory problems. About twenty years ago, he was in the hospital for a minor surgery when a nurse gave him an accidental overdose that put him into cardiac arrest. Someone wheeled him into an elevator on the way to emergency surgery and somehow managed to leave him there. Up and down he went from floor to floor in the elevator for more than thirty minutes before someone realized what had happened. They rushed him to the OR, but the surgeon botched the procedure and Victor suffered a stroke. Subsequent attempts to save his life rendered him a quadriplegic. “Then the hospital made a feeble attempt to cover up the incident. Victor’s attorneys sued both the hospital and the drug company and managed to win the largest settlement ever paid to an individual in the state of Florida.“
On the ridiculous names of coffee at Starbucks. “Grande,” I said. “Solo. Venti. Doppio. What the hell is doppio, anyway—one of the seven dwarfs?” “No,” she squealed. “But Grumpy is!” Kathleen’s laughter had passed the point of no return. Her cheeks were puffy, and her eyes had become slits. I frowned again and recited the conversation for her. “All I said was, ‘I’ll have a coffee.’ ‘What size?’ she says. ‘A regular,’ I said. ‘We have grande, venti, solo, doppio, short, and tall,’ she says. ”
It’s all done with such clever tongue-in-cheek, that each of the two books in the series I have read has been quite enjoyable and fun. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is the first Donovan Creed book and is such a fun surprise!` From the get-go, you just never know what to expect with this guy. A former-CIA, he is an assasin one minute and then opens his heart up to a little girl, a burn victim, the next. This is the first glimpse into Creed's world of assasins, gansters, women, little circus people and evil midgets bent on taking over the world.Could this happen?-of course not, but somehow Locke makes all of this come together and make perfect sense and along the way it is just a laugh-out-loud riot! Another quick read that leaves you craving more Creed by the time you get to the last page!

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I got this book on the 99 cent special from Kindle as well. I sort of enjoyed it in spite of myself. Donovan Creed still has some quasi-connection to Homeland Security, which keeps him from being in lethal trouble. It's a little bit like "Dexter" in that this is a person who does many bad things, but he is sort of clueless about relationships and how "normal" people think and speak to each other. He finds someone he's attracted to and wants her to like him and think well of him. I really don't like spy-big explosions-random violence type books in general, but this character sort of intrigued me. I think there's another in the series for 99 cents and I'll probably give it a try.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Once again, I learn that you get what you pay for. It was $.99 at the Kindle store. It’s $.99 too much. I got through about 1/3 of the book before quitting, which I don’t like to do.The book, its pacing, and especially the main character are awful. Hey, Mr. Locke, here's a suggestion: Make your protagonist have at least some redeeming characteristics.I bought this thinking that since the main character, Donovan Creed, was a CIA anti-terrorist agent, I'd like him. Problem is, Creed's also a hit man on the side. Does he take jobs on bad people? No. In fact, so long as someone's willing to pay him his fee, he could care less who he kills. He figures if his client is mad enough to take out a hit on the person, then the target must have done something wrong. Logical, huh?The plot, as far as I got, goes something like this: Creed goes looking for an ex-wife who was beaten by her then husband because Creed's ex-wife is about to marry said wife beater. When he meets this woman, he's introduced to a little girl who lost her family in a fire and was severely burned herself. So now Creed's off looking for the arsonist because he learns the family had recently won $10 million in a lottery. Of course, in going after that crime, some guy gets wind of it and tries then to kill Creed. All within a 4-5 hour span. Huh? Absurd.
