He has worked for CBS News, The Boston Globe, The Washington Post, and The Philadelphia Inquirer. Katz is also a photographer and the author of a children’s book, Meet the Dogs of Bedlam Farm. He lives on Bedlam Farm in upstate New York with the artist Maria Heinrich; his dogs Izzy, Lenore, and Frieda; and his barn cats, Mother and Minnie.

      Katz tells us at the very beginning that no dogs die in this book. That's true, but he is a hospice volunteer and he can't say the same thing about the people he and the incredible Izzy work with. Katz relates a very personal description of how his life was interrupted by depression. The past does come back to bite you. He was fortunate to have people in his life that cared about him and supported him during this diffcult time. However, I'm thinking the best care he received was through the amazing friendship, compassion, and unconditional love he received from his dogs. Recommended for dog lovers. It would also be encouraging to hospice workers and/or those suffering from depression.

      Once again, Katz triumphs. In his latest, he goes beyond his usual territory of dogs and animals on Bedlam farm. Katz decided to work with a local hospice with his dog Izzy and that decision led him to explore not only his own emotions about death and illness but the spirituality demonstated by Izzy in his work. Izzy, a formerly, hyperactive border collie could sense and respond appropriately to the terminally hill hospice clients and, in turn, teach Katz and others. Along with way, Katz shares with the reader his depression, reuniting with his sister and his gift to himself, a black laborador named Lenore, a/k/a, the hound of love. I am a huge fan of Jon Katz and devoted reader for over ten years when his journey, aided by dogs, began. I find him inspiring in his quest to live an honest and responsible life.

      I've read all Jon's books and loved them all. But, this one is my all time favorite. It touched my heart so deeply. Jon portrayed beautifully the connection between dogs and humans. His honesty about not always finding the right words to describe this connection was refreshing. Sometimes things just don't have an explanation. They can only be felt with the heart. Jon does this so eloquently in Izzy and Lenore. My own dog, who is in a wheelchair, does therapy work with hospital patients and assisted senior facilities. What transpires when she interacts with them is absolute love on a level most times I cannot find words for. All I know is that I witness something bigger than myself. Bravo, Jon for sharing Izzy and Lenore with hospice and nursing home residents and now sharing those beautiful stories with the world... what a gift for everyone.

      Katz, the author of numerous books about dogs, has written a book which deals mainly with his decision to become a hospice volunteer and to train his extremely sensitive border collie Izzy to accompany him on his hospice visits. Izzy proves to be remarkably adept at interacting with the dying hospice patients and often is able to calm and soothe otherwise difficult patients. Katz also writes about dealing with depression during a long gray winter, reconciling with his sister, and acquiring a new black Lab puppy (Lenore of the title). A wonderful book -- one cannot help but be moved at some of the interactions betweeen Katz, Izzy, and the hospice patients.

      Jon Katz is an excellent writer who has truly found his voice.His discussion of his interactions with his dogs, patients, and his own challenges always makes for very interesting reading.His journey continues....

      Jon Katz has written many books but this is tge first one I have read and enjoyed it a lot. He lives on Bedlam Farm in upper state NY and has all kinds on animals but this book is about three of his dogs, Rose, Izzy and Lenore. Rose and Izzy are Border Collies and the new pup Lenore is a Lab. Izzy is the one with more feeling and a calm disposition so she is the one who accompanies him on his hospice visits. It tells how people connect with dogs, especially those that are terminally ill. A heart warming story for all dog lovers.

      One wishes we were more like dogs, who have such pure souls. I thought Jon Katz was a bit repetitive in this book, but I read it straight through nonetheless, and now I'm steeling myself to read the Katz book where the dog dies.

      Izzy & Lenore is the uplifting true account of Jon Katz's acuisition of his two latest dogs and how they were remarkably competent as therapy dogs. Not only could Lenore, and most especially Izzy, calm spirits and bring joy to hospice patients, it turns out, they also did the same for their owner. Jon Katz gives little detail about his depression, stemming from an unhappy childhood, but it doesn't matter. The important message that he conveys brilliantly is that the dogs healed him with their innate skills at attending those who are suffering and their individual personalities. I always enjoy a Jon Katz dog book, but I think this is my favorie. He brought me close to tears with his descriptions of visiting failing hospice patients and the wonders his therapy dogs were able to bring about. One patient, who hadn't spoken coherently in months, brought forth his first recognizable phrase, "Good dog" and from there improved to the point of being released from the hospice program--he was no longer declining in health. I already believed it anyway, but Jon Katz made me truly believe dogs have a special kind of magic to know and understand people and what they need. They can read our emotions and feel responsible to guard and nurture them. Altogether an excellent book with a meaningful message.

      a nice book about the writer's journey with these two dogs and his work with hospice. i would liked a little more depth to his story but thought he captured hospice work very well

      No dogs die in this book! That said, there is death in this book, and it is a major part of the book, as Izzy becomes Katz's partner in volunteering for Hospice Care. I would say that even though this book has a different tone than the other books of his that I've read, the biggest focus is the same - the relationship between his dogs and people/himself. Totally zipped through this one.

      This was not as enjoyable for me as some of Katz's other books. I loved reading about Izzy's natural intuitive approach to Katz's hospice work. But it was more personal than Katz's other writings, and yet, didn't give the reader any sort of detail or context to help empathize with him.

      Excellent - one of the most moving books about dogs I have read. The stories were funny while being so profoundly moving. Anyone, like my wife and I, who love dogs, raise dogs, and volunteer with their therapy dogs MUST read this.

      Jon Katz writes a memoir about two amazing dogs which came into his life as he turned 60. Both dogs are very highly relational, with uncanny responses to human need and suffering. In addition to the main thread of Izzy and Jon becoming hospice volunteers, the dogs help Jon through his own dark night of the soul.Nicely done and a quick read.

      Jon Katz’s previous non-fiction dog books have all been honest, heartfelt, thoughtful, and introspective. His newest, Izzy & Lenore, is no exception and is perhaps his most personal book. I was brought to tears several times as he recounted his visits as a hospice volunteer along with his wonderful border collie, Izzy. This one may have surpassed A Dog Year as my favorite of his books.
