About this audiobook

Sometimes the man of your dreams . . .

Shop girl Poppy Fairchurch knows it’s pointless fantasizing about the Duke of Autenberry. Still, dreams can’t hurt anyone . . . unlike the carriage Poppy spies bearing down upon the unsuspecting duke. After she pulls him to safety, the duke lapses into a coma and Poppy is mistaken for his fiancée. But one person isn’t fooled: his arrogant and much too handsome half-brother, Struan Mackenzie. Soon Poppy isn’t sure what she wants more . . . the fantasy of her duke or the reality of one smoldering Scot who challenges her at every turn.

. . . is not who you think.

An illegitimate second son, Struan may have built an empire and established himself as one of the wealthiest men in Britain, but he knows he will always be an outsider among the ton. Just like he knows the infuriating Poppy is a liar. There’s no way the haughty Duke of Autenberry would deign to wed a working class girl. It doesn’t matter how charming she is. Or tempting. Or how much Struan wants her for himself.

This is the first book I’ve listened to from this author, and I was pleasantly surprised! I only like about a quarter of the Regency romances that I read, and this book could be counted as one of them! I am curious now to check out other books by this author.

This book was about a young flower shop girl, who has an infatuation with a duke that comes in regularly for flowers, but due to an unexpected chain of events, he ends up in a coma, and his family believes she is his fiancé. To complicate matters more his half brother takes a liking to her, and the pursuit is pretty hot. The narrator was fantastic and did an impressive male voice. The main male character was written in a brutishly way with an impressive confidence and complex character. I am impressed!

Poppy has a crush on Marcus, the Duke of Autenberry. Poppy is a shopgirl and although she dreams of a life with the Duke, she knows there isn’t much chance Marcus will be interested in a poor girl working at a florist. However, when Marcus is about to get hit by a carriage, Poppy comes to the rescue and saves his life. Marcus is in a coma and Poppy accompanies him to his home where she meets his family. Due to a misunderstanding they think Poppy is his fiancée and she’s being welcomed with open arms. The only one who doesn’t believe Poppy is Struan, Marcus’s illegitimate half brother. Will Poppy be able to save herself from embarrassment if the truth comes to light?

Struan and his brother Marcus have a difficult relationship. Marcus doesn’t want to believe his father was less than perfect and blames Struan for his existence. Struan’s father never wanted him and Struan has always tried to prove himself, so he feels worthy. He’s smart and successful, but he will never have the family Marcus has. There’s something he desperately wants for himself though, Poppy. Struan doesn’t think his brother is seriously courting the woman, because Marcus is a haughty Duke and Poppy is a poor working class girl. When sparks fly he thinks about taking her from his brother, will he actually try this while his brother is sleeping?

While the Duke Was Sleeping is a sexy and entertaining romantic story. The sweet and caring shopgirl Poppy dreams of falling in love with a handsome man. She’s infatuated with Marcus, but doesn’t know much about him until she saves his life. At that moment she accidentally becomes part of his family and she fits right in. Everyone loves her, including Struan. He challenges her though and doesn't accept her story as the truth. Struan is tough and moody, but he also has a kind heart and a sensitive nature he hides well. They have plenty of chemistry and he’s inclined to show Poppy the passion she deserves. Of course this makes Poppy feel torn, which is a fantastic idea for a story. I couldn’t turn the pages quickly enough to find out if Struan would win Poppy’s heart.

Sophie Jordan has a fabulous fast-paced writing style. Her story is filled with surprising twists and turns, fascinating people and complicated relationships. I loved every single page of While the Duke Was Sleeping. It’s a captivating and fun story that put a huge smile on my face. Poppy is a heartwarming main character and she’s a girl who deserves the best in life. Struan needs someone with a lovely personality who cherishes him, which makes them perfect for each other, but the circumstances definitely aren't. I like reading about a good challenge and that’s exactly what they are for one another. The result is a terrific feelgood book with plenty of true love, eventfulness and charm.

I prefer more witty conversation between the protagonists. Also, I don’t mind suspending disbelief for a romance, this one really pushed the limits, in that respect. I’ve read other books by Sophie Jordan and really enjoyed them intensely. This one seemed just “so so.” The narrator, though, did a fine job.

I love this book. I have seen the movie “While You Were Sleeping” a long time ago so I don’t remember the details and how much this book and that movie are similar. I love the characters. I feel as though the are relatable and realistic. I love the name Struan. Each character and the storyline kind of took a piece of my heart with them. Anyway, LOVE this book.

I read this in between doses of NyQuil, so my memory is a bit fuzzy but suffice to say, it did not live up to its inspiration of the move While You Were Sleeping.

I was not a fan of the "hero" in this one. He is basically constantly telling the heroine that she wants it. I still read bodice rippers of old but heroes like this in modern romances get my foot on their bum and kicked out the door.

Follows the movie's script pretty closely, even some same lines!, but because of the hero, the story was meh for me.

Loved this. It was fun to see the beginning of this series after reading book 3.

I loved Straun and Poppy they were a delightful couple to follow.

My biggest pet peeve was the issue needing one discussion to solve the problem.

Poppy Faircloth is a shopgirl at a flower shop. She has a crush on the Duke of Autenberry who comes in every week personally to have flowers delivered to a different lady. When he is caught in a brawl, Poppy saves him from an oncoming carriage, though the resulting crash leaves him in a coma. The Duke was fighting with his half-brother, Struan Mackenzie, who is suspicious of Poppy's claim that she is the Duke's fiancee as she wants to take care of him.If this sounds like the movie While You Were Sleeping, it's because it's the same story, only told in Regency times so don't expect any plot twists. Still, this was a charming read; Poppy and Struan are a good match and I enjoyed the writing.I happen to prefer books that still adhere to the "Regency Rules" where contemporary sayings or situations become part of the Regency story. While Ms. Jordan fails here (Poppy is allowed into the house and into the Duke's bedroom for example - not something that would be acceptable in the Regency period), I gave it a pass because the story was fun and the writing good. I hope that the next book in the series isn't about Bryony, Poppy's obnoxious sister unless she undergoes a complete personality change. But it looks like it might be about the Dowager Duchess of Autenberry which should be good.

Sophie Jordan starts a new series, The Rogue Files, with this story of retelling of the movie While You Were Sleeping. If you haven't seen the movie, I highly recommend you do. Sandra Bullock is at her best in the role of the heroine of that story.I have to admit that I'm not a huge fan of "retold" stories. That said, there are some that are well told and work well, and than there are some that should have never been "retold" until the characters and plot were well developed. This story falls somewhere in between.Since this is a regency interpretation of the contemporary story, in order for me to get at least some enjoyment, I really had to suspend my imagination throughout the story.I was really glad the author decided to give Struan Mackenzie, a secondary character in Ms. Jordan's All the Ways to Ruin a Rogue, his own happily ever after. I liked him a lot and thought he deserved a good woman, except I never thought he'd fall for someone like Poppy. I just didn't like her much. She was one of those women that never really "got it". For her to live in this "dream" of affection for someone she hardly knew, it just fell flat for me. I didn't feel it, and wondered how could she be so infatuated with this man.In the end, if you're a fan of this author, as I am, you'll probably get this story, but if you've never read her before, I'd say skip this one and try her earlier titles.Melanie for b2bGift copy provided by the publisher for an honest review

2 Stars | Hot SteamSophie Jordan is one of my favorite historical romance authors. So it pains me to write how disappointed I was with WHILE THE DUKE WAS SLEEPING. Perhaps it would have helped if I didn’t dislike the movie it was based upon, While You Were Sleeping. However, I gave it a chance thinking that if anyone could make a masterpiece out of a mountain of cinematic mediocrity, it was Sophie Jordan. If you loved the film, this novel may be a delight for you. Unfortunately for me, the plot was just too similar to the original to enjoy. Additionally, I couldn’t relate to Poppy. I found her to be vapid, unsympathetic, and at times, amoral in character. She essentially cheats on her fiancé multiple times. I can’t believe that I am about to defend While You Were Sleeping, but here I go: In the film version, they actually got the romance right—not great, right. Sandra and Bill keep it chaste while she’s lying to everyone. Sandra's character’s morals and guilt were too high to give into temptation. And I respect that. Poppy and Straun on the other hand, are all over each other. For a lover of high heat in my romances, I can appreciate the passionate scenes for their steam factor and hot description, but the icky and dishonest circumstances surrounding the characters in those scenes didn’t sit well with me at all.Pass.Complimentary copy provided in exchange for an honest review.
