I needed a breezy read, and I got one. Predictable, as romances often are, with a paranormal twist in that the main character, Aubrey, is a (reluctant) medium. This unwanted and sometimes dangerous talent dogged her childhood and a year ago, broke up her marriage. Finally settled into a job with a small town newspaper, Aubrey's life is overturned when the convicted murderer of a young woman twenty years ago is released due to the discovery of new evidence. Brash and arrogant reporter Levi, brought in to cover the story, is unexpectedly paired with Aubrey. The two discover they have a connection that spans decades, and resulting sparks seem to derail the story and the (you knew it) growing romance. I thought the author did a nice job with descriptions, and the plot led smoothly to the climax of the story. Fairly good handling of the fallout from emotionally complex issues including abuse and suicide. Of course, our heroes solve the murder (at risk to life and limb) and anything else would be a spoiler, wouldn't it?

Unique, realistic characters are a strong selling point for me, and this book excels in that respect. I loved Aubrey. The book opens with her as a child, and I immediately connected with her; not because of any similarities with my own childhood, but because I truly felt what she was going through. We soon jump ahead to Aubrey in adulthood, and the emotional connection stays strong throughout the remainder of the book.I loved Aubrey's ghost visits. Each ghost has a different personality and agenda. Aubrey's ambivalence in regards to her gift is handled well. She seems to be straddling two different worlds, with some people who love and support her and others who have bullied her into silence. This is an issue that resonates outside of the supernatural, fictional world, highlighting the difficulty in finding acceptance when you don't quite fit the expected norm. The romance aspect, for me, is handled perfectly. It's a slow burn that evolves along the way, allowing the rest of the story room to grow. The one minor issue I had came with the flashbacks, both with the victim and with Levi. Overall, these were long passages that took me out of the immediacy of the present story. I understand why the author chose to include these, and they certainly are fascinating stories on their own, but focusing so much on the pasts of two different characters has the disadvantage of taking focus away from the main character and the story at hand. Aubrey is a memorable character that I enjoyed spending time with. While I know this isn't the start of a series, I'm holding out hope that she'll have another story to tell us sometime in the future.

I stopped after listening to 6 hours of this book. It wasn't bad, but I didn't much enjoy it either. The story is told like two separate stories unfolding at the same time, rather than the main character discovering the information through investigation via her job as a reporter.

Aubrey Ellis has made a comfortable life for herself as a reporter concentrating on real estate profiles in the small town of Surrey. She had a very different childhood traveling from place to place with her Grandmother's carnival after losing her parents in a car accident. Aubrey also has to deal with ghosts. Some come to her to get resolution of unfinished business from their lives; others are evil remnants. Aubrey never knows what kind of ghost it will be. Often the ghosts leave her with tangible gifts - marbles, dried flowers, post cards. Often, also, the resolution isn't immediate.Aubrey is also in the process of a divorce that she really doesn't want. She married Owen after a whirlwind courtship thinking that he wanted the same things she did - a small town, a house with a white picket fence, a couple of kids - but Owen is a computer expert who deals with security issues who is constantly on the move. When a body is discovered bricked up in the walls of a house owned by Dustin Byrd, it reopens a twenty-year-old missing person case. Missy Flanagan disappeared just before she turned twenty-one and ex-Army vet Frank Delacort was quickly convicted on circumstantial evidence of her murder. He has spent the past twenty years in prison. Aubrey doesn't want anything to do with the new investigation since the last thing she wants to do is deal with an angry, revenge seeking ghost but she is soon paired up with Levi St. John, a hotshot reporter sent in by the owners of the newspaper. Together the two investigate the life of Missy Flanagan and the events of her life. A good part of the story has to do with Aubrey finding someone who really understood her unique gift. The story has a number of flashbacks to Aubrey's childhood and to the time when Missy goes missing. Getting Missy' story from her point of view lets us know a lot more than Aubrey and Levi do as they investigate. I liked the tension between Aubrey and Levi who have very different viewpoints about the natures of reality and who have very different personalities. I also liked that they became friends before their relationship took a turn for the romantic. I really enjoyed this fast paced mystery filled with intriguing characters.

MY REVIEW OF " GHOST GIFTS' by  LAURA SPINELLAOMG!  KUDOS to author Laura Spinella "Ghosts Gifts" for her breathtaking, awe-inspiring  descriptive novel. I loved everything about this book! The genres of this story are Para-normal, Mystery, Thriller and Suspense, and Fiction.  I could easily see this story adapted as a screenplay for a movie or TV series.  There are twists and turns, suspense, some chilling moments where the hairs on my neck were standing up. How would you feel if you had the ability to converse with dead spirits that were reaching out to you? You were the only one that could provide closure to their living relatives. You were the only one that could feel the anguish, anger and the evil of some spirits? Could you realize what problems this "gift' could cause in your life? The author describes her characters as complex and complicated. Aubrey Ellis writes for a local newspaper about houses in the community for sale. Aubrey has inherited the familial psychic ability to communicate with spirits of dead people. The spirits usually appear to her, and there are certain smells, and sounds that trigger Aubrey making her aware of this.  Her grandmother Charlie has been Aubrey's family, and has dreams about things. Aubrey's deceased father had the same ability as Aubrey, and had difficulty with it.  Aubrey doesn't advertise her gift and keeps it to herself.  Aubrey kept this a secret from her husband Owen, who had problems dealing with this when he found out.  Aubrey's talent can be extremely dangerous to her.Aubrey has been very happy writing about homes for sale in the community. Suddenly an opportunity presents itself where the editor of her newspaper wants her involved  in a murder mystery, that goes back twenty years. The last thing Aubrey wants to do is deal with a murder because of her special ability. In addition, the parent company of the newspaper brings in special help to write about this. Aubrey is to partner with an investigative reporter Levi St. John. The story takes place in the present and past when it is relevant to Aubrey and other characters. I was totally mesmerized and captivated by this intense story. Laura Spinella is an amazing story-teller. I was dead wrong in who I thought the killer of the murdered victim was, and I tried to follow all the clues. There are secrets and betrayals in this mystery. I highly recommend this intriguing story for readers who enjoy novels about para-normal events, mystery, and suspense. I received a copy of this novel for my honest review. BE WARNED: This is a novel that you can't put down!! Happy Reading!

Ever since Aubrey Ellis was a young girl, raised by her grandmother, a traveling carnival owner, ghosts have been drawn to her to solicit her assistance in communicating to their loved ones before they be at peace. However, granting their wishes have never been easier since many believe Aubrey's attempts to communicate as a con to bilk the living of their money. When the skeletal remains of young Missy is discovered entombed within the basement wall of a former lover twenty years after her disappearance, the drifter found guilty and imprisoned is released and the former lover placed in jail. However, there are questions about the case which might mean that the man being released was truly the killer. The local newspaper assigns hard nose, but troubled, Levi St. John, to investigate the case. The novice reporter Aubrey is assigned to the case, fearing that her secret ability might be exposed.Although much of this novel was predictable, I enjoyed it, especially the relationship between Aubrey and Levi. The plot was executed well and enriched through the audiobook's narration by Nicol Zanzarella. The second novel in this series is scheduled to be released later this year and I will pick it up.

I received this book as a Kindle First ebook (it was either free or the at a discount...I can't remember)I loved this book. I didn't expect much having never read the author, but I was very pleasantly surprised. It starts with a young girl who can see and communicate with ghosts. Then, fast forward 20 years and the girl is grown and now a reporter for a small town newspaper. When a body turns up it leads to a 20yr old murder case and possible miscarriage of justice. Aubrey (the reporter) is assigned to cover the story. As she investigates her paranormal gifts come into play, even more questions are unearthed, and a romance blooms. I could not put this book down.
