About this audiobook

Pain, horror, fear-these are the things that bestselling novelist Lance Metzger's life have been comprised of. His childhood remains a riddled wasteland of abuse by a sadistic father and the abandonment of an apathetic mother. In turn, his only refuge became his writing.
When Lance loses his ability to write and becomes haunted by a nightmare that he'd thought was buried, he is drawn inexplicably to a house on the shores of Lake Superior, where he finds his muse once again-but something is waiting for him when he arrives.
Now he must unlock the devastating secrets that the house holds and uncover the mystery of his own broken past before he loses his sanity, and perhaps his soul.

Was great in the beginning, awesomely scary in the middle, and kinda ridiculous in the end. How does one actually KILL a ghost? Still trying to wrap my head around that one. Other than that, I’d recommend it.

One of the best audiobooks I have ever listened to. Joe Hart captured the anguish and pain of human cruelty, not only from the victims stand point but also the perpetrators. The evil of cruelty from the hand of a stranger to another is one level of evil but the cruelty of evil brought on by the hand of a loved one, husband to a wife is another but the brutality of a parent to a child is the worst kind imaginable. Joe Hart gave you all 3 scenarios making you feel for each of them in different ways. Powerful depictions and heart tearing truths of what such abuse does to normality and how it cripples and tortures the victims soul even when abuse is not happening... it made your heart bleed for the characters. Then he shows you the remnants of what the abuse leaves behind in its wake. The daily struggles to contain the torment. Even when you pull forward to some kind of normalcy, there is always some trigger taking you back to the tournament. Finally, he leads you to the progression of evil, how it's like an inheritance, one generation handing it down to the next. The narrator was the perfect choice, he kept the tone of despair and tournament tight not faltering a second, keeping you pinned to the tale with the highest level excitement. A Powerful, penetrating, heartfelt story, worth every minute. I absolutely loved it.

    New favorite author!
I don’t usually do ghosts and haunting and such, but I’m so glad to have stumbled across this book.

Narrator good, difficulty understanding words at times.

OK, my 4-star rating may be a little inflated, but I'm judging this book for what it is, not comparing it to War and Peace. It's a horror novel, a ghost story -- and I love ghost stories -- independently published as an e-book by the author. It's one that kept me turning pages and even seemed to have some Big Picture thematic ideas. It is quite violent at the beginning and, as I expected, at the end. The violence at the beginning demonstrates the brutality of evil people. The violence at the end . . . well, it's a horror novel. But it hit a few themes and chords beyond a typical mindless gore fest. And the middle was absolutely creepy, don't-read-it-alone-at-night creepy. In the prologue, set in 1945, we meet a sadistic SS officer in charge of a concentration camp. Then, as the body of the story begins in 1990, we meet Lance, the child of a brutal, sadistic father and a victimized mother. We get a concrete look at how cruel evil people can be.Lance somehow survives his childhood and becomes a famous horror author. He has always kept the mental demons at bay with his writing, but as we re-encounter him in 2012, he has been struck by writer's block -- and nightmares of his father. He is inexplicably drawn to a big, empty house on the shores of Lake Superior. As he moves there, stranger and stranger things begin happening. And, eventually, it all seems to be tied to secrets in his family lineage. You can sort of see what's coming . . . but not all of it, by a long shot.OK, true to its genre, this got a little outlandish. But it was good enough that I suspended disbelief and got caught up in the story -- and plan to keep an eye on this author. He writes pretty well -- maybe well enough that we'll see him writing for a major publisher someday.
