Definitely an improvement over book two, although the love triangle-y aspects are still annoying. But I very much enjoyed the multiple POV's - especially Evangeline! What?? I am now actually looking forward to the release of book 4 - I'm very interested to see how this saga plays out.
Rating: 4Here's the thing. I liked this book, I really did. it was nice to find out more about maven, evangeline, and the other countries besides norta. I just didn't care for Cameron or her POV so a found myself dragging through a lot of the book. Still, I did enjoy it. the story line was sound and the characters were great. I would recommend this book and series. 4 out of 5 stars.
Rating: 4A solid continuation of the Red Queen series. I really enjoyed the first half of this book, with the tension of Mare living as a prisoner with the Silver royals. It some ways it was similar to the first book in the series, and of course, Mare eventually makes her escape and rejoins the Red Guard. Hints are given about the origin of the abilities displayed by the Silvers and newbloods, a theme I hope will be covered in the next book in the series. All in all, a good book and I hope the next one is released soon!
Rating: 43.5 Stars - which seems like a pretty low rating for a book that I really enjoyed, but I didn't feel that this book added anything new. It's the same amazing world with the same love triangle and the battles are impressive and would make a spectacular block buster. But reading this felt like seeing yet another X-Men movie with mutants of one power battling mutants of another. I think all the possible battle combinations - magnetrons vs water people, fire people vs. lightning, etc. were already done in Book 2. This would have been a fabulous trilogy, but it's clear that there is a Book 4 in the wings and possibly more.
Rating: 4This novel is the third in a series, with Red Queen being book one. Do not read further if you haven’t read books one or two because there are spoilers.The novel begins where book two ended. Mare is a well-kept prisoner. She isn’t in a prison; she has her own room with a bathroom and is well fed. Despite these positives, Mare declines rapidly because Maven has placed silent stone manacles on her wrists to keep her powers at bay. She is surrounded by Arvens almost constantly. It’s only with Mare that Maven can truly be himself and he believes himself to be in love with her. Therefore, he absolutely will not let her go--she belongs to him. She references herself as Maven’s “pet.” She hopes to be rescued by the Scarlet Guard but realizes that she’ll probably have to rescue herself. Mare witnesses everything that happens in the Palace and the tour they take through the kingdom, storing up knowledge for when she is free. Most of the novel is from Mare’s point of view as she watches Maven lie to his people, his court, and try to save his kingdom through manipulations.We have Carmen’s point of view to let us know what is going on with the Scarlet Guard while Mare is essentially held hostage. Carmen still feels used by the Guard and wants to free her brother and leave. Her anger for Mare wars with her belief that Mare should be free. We know little about Cal--Carmon does follow him and we find out what Cal is doing towards the end of the novel. You will eventually meet people from Command and get hints but not full knowledge as to what they want. We don’t know why, but Mare Barrow is very important to them. This is a long novel and there’s a lot of down time. Mare is imprisoned most of the novel and we know almost nothing about Cal’s feelings or actions. There are a few battle scenes to pick up the pace. We also get Evangelina’s point of view later in the novel that gives us a different and interesting point of view. I thought this would be a trilogy, but it’s not. It appears to be a four-book series, so if you have waited for books three, I would just wait for book four and read both at once because this one ends in a dramatic moment like the others.
Rating: 4[MILD SPOILERS THROUGHOUT]So, we've followed Mare for two books and now this one divides the pov between Mare, Cameron, and Evangeline. I'm not a fan of this. We just met Cameron, I would think Cal would have been a more natural choice. Or even Kilorn, though I don't really like him. And I could have done without Evangeline's perspective completely.Speaking of Evangeline, suddenly she's lesbian. And Maven is bisexual. Odd how those both came up in the third book, though we've known these characters since the first book. It's as if the editor was pushing Aveyard to include LGBT+ characters. Otherwise, I would say that I think the character development in this series has been good. I enjoyed the dynamic between Mare and Maven as he keeps her captive and attempts to manipulate things so that they can be together, and she struggles against Stockholm syndrome.I could completely relate to Cameron in this scene: "I want to snap that my priority is to get the heat working in my barracks, not find out how many times Mare used the bathroom today, but her sweet face stops the impulse. Farley must have sent the cutest bleeding kid in the base. Damn her." Sometimes, the kid's so cute you can't be mad.And, speaking of Farley, her mysterious question from the last book was pretty easy to guess, considering it was stated that she rested her hand gently on her belly...I feel like there are a couple of times when Aveyard's description of Mare's electricity is inaccurate. Like when the guards were being electrocuted, Mare was careful to not step in the puddle of water, but then she touched a guard to take his key and she should have been shocked then. Though, she was impervious to the current when her ability was first revealed... But she was shocked by her own electricity because of the machine... I don't know. Is she immune to the electricity or isn't she? And if she is, why was she so careful to stay away from the puddle?Also, Mare kept mentioning that the ends of her hair were turning grey. I'm pretty sure that isn't a thing. Hair turns grey from the roots. Though, I guess you could say since the grey is a result of magic use, normal rules don't apply...
Rating: 3Living up to her end of the bargain with Maven, Mare Barrow is now captured and living in chains in the new king's citadel. She expects him to kill her especially when his betrothed, Evangeline, starts antagonizing him - but he doesn't, keeping her locked in Silent Stone to not be able to use her "newblood" lightning ability. Meanwhile, the Scarlet Guard is plotting their own next move, hoping once and for all that the oppressed Reds and newbloods will be able to take over the Silvers, despite each house's special abilities.The new book in The Red Queen series does not disappoint. Multiples points of view are utilized to show the reader what's going on with the various players, primarily switching back and forth between Mare and Cameron, the newblood girl Mare rescued from prison in Glass Sword. I found Mare really hard to like in the previous book, but here her distrustfulness and confusion were easier for me to stomach. Maven, too, comes across as a more complex character as he attempts to solidify his throne but also knows that he isn't quite right because his mother, Queen Elara, had the ability to affect minds. The only frustrating thing was getting to the end and realizing this is most likely not a trilogy.

Rating: 5The third installment in Victoria Aveyard’s Red Queen series, King’s Cage, is probably my favorite so far. Once again, Aveyard proves she is more focused on telling a story than describing a romance – something my readers know I really like. Especially when it comes to young adult fantasy. In fact, I feel labeling this series as “romance” is a stretch – especially given how little Aveyard focuses on actual material meant to draw in readers of that genre.
King’s Cage begins where Glass Sword left off: Mare’s deal with Maven. While she spends her time in prison, we finally get to learn more about other characters in the story – namely Cameron and (later) Evangeline. Though the latter takes place more toward when the action begins to kick up. Naturally, the story is more focused on Mare even from these perspectives, but it provides a refreshing look at the rebellion.
Surprisingly, there are several turns in King’s Cage that caught me entirely off guard. This is a good thing: I hate when books and stories become predictable. I won’t divulge more than that, for fear of spoilers, but I will say this: so far, this book is my favorite in the series and though I am so angry at the ending I could burn it, part of me wants to open it back up to page one and start again. I don’t imagine the library will like it much if I burn their book.
Until the fourth book hits shelves, I guess I’ll have to satisfy my hunger for more by reading the two novellas that Aveyard wrote for her post-apocalypse universe. Oh, and as a side note? This is the first one I read physically so I finally got to see a map of the lands. As I suspected, it takes place in the ruins of what was once the United States.

This started out really slow. The whole first half was really slow, but things really picked up in the second half and I couldn't put it down. I wasn't a huge fan of the alternating POVs. I understand why it was necessary, but I didn't think Cameron's POV added much to the story. Evangeline's POV was an interesting twist. Wasn't expecting it and having seen her through Mare's eyes this whole time I obviously hated her, so seeing her POV made me think differently. I would have LOVED to have seen things from Cal's POV though. Mare finally grows up in this one and she was bad ass in those fight scenes. I loved seeing her relationship with Cal finally grow, but that ending...SO glad I don't have to wait for the next book.
Rating: 4King's Cage felt long but I enjoyed the value that it brought to the series. I have to warn this is going to have a little bit of spoiler to today's review; not much of a spoiler just a little. This book was horrible, wonderful, and intelligent all in one. I think reading while she was captured was boring to a lot of people because a lot of time is passing and Mare isn't able to do really anything. I think the author did that very well. You feel the passing of time. You read as there are things happening in the world beyond Mare's control and she barely hears about any of it. You see how hollow and desperate she is for escape while she spends months in her room alone with nothing but silence. While she is held as Maven's prisoner, she has to deal with all the emotions that she has been avoiding in the previous books. That must have been horrible and I felt for Mare, it was a horrible time for her. If you don't read all the books in a row like I am doing these weeks, you might very well miss out on those important things. You might not remember how in Glass Sword, she was merely a tool to be used to fight. She cut herself off from everyone around her so that she wouldn't have any more emotions. Mare didn't allow herself to think or feel about anything but completing the next task. The first half of King's Cage features Mare and is about her captivity and character growth.
Victoria Aveyard gives us a reprieve from just reading about Mare in a plain room with nothing to do. She gives us a couple other characters perspectives in this novel. I appreciate that a lot because without that it would be a really boring book. You get to see what is continuing to happen for the Red Guard even though Mare isn't there. You even get to see from a silver's perspective, which I'm not going to say who, but I really liked that. I would love to continue but I think that would just ruin the "reveals" about that character and who they really are.
It was wonderful to see the strength of the uprising. The strength of Montfort, the Ardent people, and their leader. Victoria Aveyard does a great job of bringing them into the world and showing their democracy. You also get a small taste of their battle tactics and it makes you curious even more. Like I wonder how extreme are they? To what ends are they willing to go to? Wonderful to see the full force of all the different people fighting together and against each other. You actually see what a battle full of abilities is like in this world. Both sides bring their A-Game. You get to see how powerful Mare really could be as she stands alone protecting herself surrounded by silvers. You get to see new alliances and relationships how they have changed in the many months since Mare's capture. Mare and Cal get a reunion and it feels like the pieces are really beginning to come together for the world. It had the feeling that the end was near and the author could have written a quick happily ever after. That is not what you get in this book.
One part that I had to bother my husband about because I thought it was sooooo good, was the political side of things. You get to see different people strategically moving to complete different tasks. Maven had it rough this book. You find out more about his damaged character, he is betrayed, and he has to repair his kingdom enough so they'll stop rebelling. He does a tour, but really it is just like today's politicians, going around town to town making promises and motivational speeches. I loved that, it makes you think about how much we hear and what is just someone trying to keep you dumb and ignorant of what's really going on. I think that fits perfectly with today's world of politics that it's almost scary. So bringing something like that in, and having it written well that you can understand the meaning at any age is pretty good. There are a lot of politics going on in this book, more than the others. You have even more people who are just trying to maneuver the things they control to get to the ending they want. It's done really good.
Cal is an idiot. I'm totally serious, he is an idiot

You meet many new leaders from different places, an escape attempt, a rescue, two major battles, a few reveals that were previously speculation at least for me. A little bit of love and a lot more loss.

Didn’t like the ending
Rating: 4There's not really much new to say about this one, considering it's the third book in the series. It's a direct continuation off of book two, and definitely offers some more insight into several characters and leads to a major cliff-hanger, but is overall as one would expect from the series as a whole at this point, and that's a good thing.
Rating: 4If it were possible to give a book 6 stars, I would. I adore the entire series, but this was my favourite of the bunch. Mare's trauma was so realistically depicted (unlike a lot of people, I don't find her whiny, but interestingly flawed), we got some great insights into Maven's character, but most of all, Evangeline absolutely shone here and in the final book. Victoria Aveyard is the queen of plot twists and she always keeps me guessing!

King's Cage was great! It was really cool seeing the characters grow and change. Evangeline's story took me by surprise. Which is good. I really suck at reviews lol.
